Hello from another Michigander!
« on: February 24, 2012, 03:18:18 PM »
Hello folks,

My name is Jamie, I live in (currently slushy) southeast Michigan, originally from Toronto. I bought my 1974 CB550 in April of last year and had a great first season with it. It came with a MAC 4-into-1 and a healthy 34,000 miles on it. So far I have slapped some drag bars on it, put in a Barnett clutch and that's about it. It's currently disassembled so I can have a service bore done on it. Future plans include a new oil pump(Hat tip to Hondaman) and chain. I also need to figure out what's wrong with the damn electric start.

I wasn't sure if I already had an introduction thread because I registered here quite some time ago and have been lurking/learning ever since. There is a ton of useful information and knowledge from the member base here. I can't thank you all enough for the valuable resources and input you have provided. I haven't needed to make any useless question threads yet! I feel this might change soon as I have a bit of work ahead of me.

Cheers!

Obligatory intro photos:

Welcome to the Forum, J.B.!  Be sure to post in the 500/550 Registry thread.  Nice bike.  Are you interested in joining us in the 2012 Rally? Looks like it will pass through Michigan in August this year.

That picture was taken at the Packard plant on East Grand Boulevard.

Is this your first bike?

Actually my first bike was a 1972 Yamaha LS2, a fairly rare 100cc two stroke twin. I loved that bike, it was an absolute blast to ride. My friends and I were going to make it into a little racer but I had to sell it for funds toward my 550.

Thanks for the warm welcome, fellas!

This story from Detroit Free Press 3/2/2012:
Quote
Contractor: Packard plant to be razed
The man who Detroit officials say is responsible for the aging Packard Plant — a symbol of the city’s decay — is on the verge of demolishing the massive east-side structure, a contractor said late Thursday.
Dominic Cristini, who has claimed ownership of the disputed property, had contractors surveying the industrial ruins for four months and is merely awaiting demolition permits, said Mike Carlomusto, owner of AVC Services in Harrison Township.
“We’ve got big lights going up next week. We’re going to put fencing all around it” to keep scavengers out after razing of the historic Albert Kahn-designed complex begins, Carlomusto said.

Xeno - better get there quick!
JB - the value of your photo is on the rise as it will soon be an historic artifact.

I didn't catch the details in time, but I just heard the tail-end of something on NPR that sounded like they were about the begin the tear-down of the Packard plant.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Yeah I heard about this today as well. They have been trying to get the owner (once he got out of jail) to tear it down for quite some time. This time it seems to be a little more real as there is quite a bit of buzz compared to past attempts. I was just down there two days ago and I didn't see anything out of the ordinary.

There's an article on Detroit News' website right now but I'm not allowed to post external links yet.  :-\
