Throttle Cables OEM vs Non
« on: February 26, 2012, 10:43:06 AM »
Hey guys

The bikes (78 550K) is really coming along, thanks for all your help.

I need to replace both of my throttle cables...whats the deal with these. Are non OEM's decent enough quality or should i definitely get OEM.

Can you reccomend any websites for purchase?

Thanks

Non is fine. They are not as good though. You need to lube them while the oem cables have a liner in them that does not require lube. The aftermarket cables are sometimes not quite the right length and so routing can be more critical.

I went OEM, they fit right and the pair I replaced lasted 28 years, so I guess it will be the last pair I replace.

I got a set of motion pro on a bike sitting in the yard, and they feel nylon lined...

Some people have discussed problems with Motion Pro and correct length. That may have been corrected.

Look at an OEM cable and imitations and you'll see/feel the difference in quality (details). OEM, in my experience, practically lives forever. Further advantage: just order the right partnumber (note that Honda has different models to accommodate their various handlebars!). It is as with airfilters, carbparts and breaker points. Choose the genuine part and you'll never have to doubt you made the right choice. That in it self is well worth the money spent.

I think it's mainly a matter of whether you want to spend the extra money up front, or spend it over time.  I went with Motion pro on my bikes.  Just replaced the throttle and clutch cables on the 750 (the bike that's ridden the most) that were installed in 2004.  I highly doubt that would have been necessary if I had used oem cables.  Not that I regret the decision, I'm still using Motion Pro.
