Lubing the chain - one can at a time
« on: February 27, 2012, 09:14:30 AM »
Saturday I cleaned the chain and tried to lube it with Motul chain wax spray. The nozzle clogged after short while, decided to open it up instead and brush it on.
It was bit of a show but no serious damage/injury occured and now I have lubed chain a non of the lube left.

Would you know if anybody sells chain specific lube in any other package than spray? Yes, I could use heavy oil, but I would like to use a brush on chain lube since the brush seldom cloggs up.

Hmm...I have never seen one of them clog before.  However, I use Maxima spray on chain wax and have never had a problem.

Use gear lube ..get a container that has a closeable tip ..ie chalkline , chalk container, shampoo bottle.. that sort of thing .. some gear lube liters come with small tip.
Once you figure out amount.. we were getting around 1500 miles combined city and hiway before wheel got messy.. and between 16-40 K out of a good chain...

Old habits are hard to break.  Over the years I have gone thru probably 20 cans of PJ-1 and never had a can clog on me.  The lube should not have hardened like paint does in a nozzel. Possible defective valve?  Or was the can cold, like stored in an unheated garage or shop?  If so, may have just needed to warm the can in some hot water for a while.

Motul chain wax is crap anyway (IMHO). Flings off too easily. Get the PJ-Blue or Chain Wax. Better for staying on the chain. Is this O-ring or standard?

Chain lube thread!  ;D

I've been using Teflon Chain-Saver lube lately with an o-ring chain.  I like it.

PJ-1 blue is crappier than crap. lasts about 20 miles if it's raining.

Many riders do not read the directions.
It says that it must be left on overnight THEN you can ride it.
Then it stays on.

I use the PJ brand chain lube with no problems at all.

Like wise.  PJ1 has served me well for many years.  I normally check and lube the chain when putting a bike up for the night, preferably when the chain is still warm.  Helps it soak in between the links and into the pins.  Time permitting, next day I wipe the chain down with a shop rag before riding to get the excess lube off.  What little sling off I get has never been an issue for me.

Heh, yeah. I guess if you just use the garden hose you're doing it wrong. ::)

I use automotive rear end limited slip additive. Put bike on center stand spin wheel and use small brush to apply. Wipe off access. Works great and throws very little off.

This blurb is from the Diamond Chain site:

Cleaning and Re-lubrication
Perhaps the largest contributor to shortened chain life is inadequate lubrication. All working parts of a chain should be lubricated uniformly. The use of the highest viscosity oil that allows for flow between the link plates and coats pin-bushing
areas will nornally provide the greatest wear resistance. Clean and lubricate chain periodically as riding situations warrant.

http://www.diamondchain.com/files/DC_cycle_chain.pdf

When I was young and had lots of time I used to cook my chains outside on the hotplate in STP (IIRC) after rinsing them with safetykleen. These days I spray on the BelRay which is OK. I got a new can of 7th gear from the Triumph dealer  but I haven't tried it yet.

Who's got the popcorn? :)

'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.
