Nuts,Bolts, etc
« on: May 08, 2005, 06:13:17 AM »
Anyone have any suggestions about getting bolts, washers and other small parts coated.  I know people have said to get things zinc plated.  I am having trouble finding someone to do it in this area (Minnesota).  I can just as easily ship it out.  Also, where is the best place to find replacement bolts, etc.  What type does anyone suggest

Theres a couple guys on ebay who sell stainless steel bolt kits for our bikes and many others.  They are allen head bolts too so no more stripping out phillips heads.  I think they run about $15 to $30 shipped, depending on if you get a complete set or just a kit for the engine side cases.

Any details on these? I'd love to find one of those kits for a 75-550.

I bought a kit of 60 stainless allen bolts for my CB750K from eBay for $29 and EVERY bolt fit right and looks terrific!  Very happy with this purchase.  The seller has a set for CB550's on eBay now at

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4547173011&category=35595&sspagename=WDVW

If the auction has ended, his eBay useraname is www-dot-netgap-dot-com and you can search for his items.  I emailed them with a few questions and they were great folks to deal with.

http://www.crc2onlinecatalog.com/ sells a set of allen head bolts for $20.  They worked great on my 750.  They're listed under "motor parts".

It is far cheaper and much more accurate to simply go through your parts manual, make a list of all the bolts/nuts/washers you want to replace and then go to a fastener company and buy them.

Here in the Toronto area, I went to Brafasco.  They actually make fasteners.  I replaced nearly every bolt and washer I could with stainless hex-head bolts (allan key).  Even the little bolts holding the signal/brake light lenses were available.  Very long and skinny.

Heck, the bolts holding my leads to my battery are stainless hex-heads ;)  The bolts clamping the signal lights to the stalks, engine casing, carb float bowls, intake boot clamp bolts, bolts clamping the left and right controls to the bars, headlight bolts (the three on the bucket) etc. etc.

The parts manual gives you the size and length of every bolt on the bike.  Just put them into a spreadsheet and go shopping!

There are several companies that sell zinc plating stuff. If you want 100% original nothing beats re zincing the bolts you have. If not go with the stainless allen head.

Eastwood Co. makes a starter kit for zinc.

Be sure to use anti seize with those stainless fasteners. I prefer copper anti seize.

I am facinated by questions regarding the fasteners on these bikes, Mainly because I live in "Metric Land" and all these are available for "Cents". I have replaced most of my fasteners with stainless, ( grab a few bolts from work on the way home without a thought.) but  note ...they are not as strong as the HSS or carbon steel ones. (Do they need to be??) I ground off the markings on the heads and polished them..look original. I should really go into business supplying these if they are so difficult to acquire! ;)

Thanks alot for the information.  Here in the US metric are very difficult to get your hands on.  I checked with many of the best hardware stores and the supply is very limited.

I came across this place, Maryland Metrics..."http://www.mdmetric.com, a while back while looking for metric screws. It looks like they carry a wide line of fasteners and tools. I haven't used them so can't vouch for them.

As mentioned by someone very wise - use anti seize. Stainless fasteners & alloy love each other - so much that you will never get them undone.
Any reputable auto place will have suitable gunk.

Can someone please post the details of antiseize? I understand the why and what for, I'm looking for good/bad brands and types and the reasoning therof. How do you use it, just a little or gobs? Where? Should it be used on all bolts, or just certain ones?

There is at lest 3 different bases for anti sieze.  1 useds alum (for alum), 1 uses tin (for steel), 1 uses copper (for steel, bronze/brass)
These all claim to work to work on everything.  use the right one for the right job and who cares who makes it. read the can and it will give the base metal.
These wonderful little birds are great flyers, delicious eating, excellent for training your hunting dog, and just fun to shoot,or stuff and keep around the house.  Bobwhites can be put with other types of Quail and have very large penis's.  Quail are very popular with the babes.

Hey Chris,  one place to use it for sure would be the side case that covers the front sprocket and oil pump on a 550.  Learned that the hard way.  I had to drill one out cuz I stripped it so bad...even using the correct size phillips.
