Keep in mind that you want to stagger the holes in a way that will pass by the entire surface of the brake pad.

Like these:
http://www.vinmoto.org/gallery/v/VinMoto-Garage/album03/Godfferys-Garage-123/album185/Brake+Rotors+_+Thinned+and+Drilled/HONDA+Front+brake+rotors+CB+350K-350F-360-400F/

If you do not, it will cause the pad to where unevenly then start digging groves in the rotor.

What do you mean ? that the whole pattern should be fitted within the whole brake disc height ?

No,
Think of the rotor being a straight bar; if there are any areas of the brake pad that do not cross over holes, it will not where the same as the area of pad that dose.  You also want the pad to cross over about the same amount of holes per liner millimeter.

You can also think of the Brake pad as a comb; you want all of the teeth of the comb to cross over a hole and about the same amount of holes.

Many people have patterns not like this and I never heard about this problem. It sounds theoretically reasonable, but I'm not sure about how big practical impact it has. Would be fun to see :)

Well it's not going to cause it to explode or anything but if the rotor heats unevenly, it will warp.

Due to the small distances and the convection rate in these kind of materials I doubt that even a racing use could cause uneaven thermal gradients big enough to warp the disc.  I think if you manage to warp the disc it's because of the overall temperature that's (some how) very high, like machining, mayhem braking use etc. :)

And I'm thankful for that !
I just thinking that maybe there's another explanation to warped disc.
Many holes and (as in your example) a really thin disc can lead to high convection rates and bad heat exchange to the air cause the whole disc to get to hot and then warp.
But all input is good input ! 8)

Heat and uneven where are the 2 most damaging effect on rotors.
(next to totally warn out pads of course)

Today's modern rotors are thinner & drilled or slotted because the industry has discovered threw the years that this will distribute & dissipate heat better.  There is also the bonus of being much liter, reducing unsprung weight as well as gyroscopic effect.

That's true, and don't forget that our bikes have the first disc brake on a motorcycle. There has been quite a big improvement in materials over the last 40 years. Providing a disc capable of today's performance :)

Nice. I've got Koni's (actual Koni, not the modern Ikon) on my GL1000.

My basket case 550 came with Monroe's. Since I don't have a running bike yet I'm not sure how they will work.

I would be interested in your old Marzocchi.
How much would need for them with shipping to the US?
