My Hondaman 836 motor arrived today - hurrayyyyyy!
« on: February 28, 2012, 02:46:54 PM »
Thought I'd start a project thread for this motor that arrived from Mark today since it's a brand new motor from the ground up. It's going in a ruby red K1 this weekend.

You will love that extra power. When I did my RC836 years ago I was always, for awhile, fishing for another gear in 5th because the power 'felt' like it was still in 4th.
Is that a 71 engine also?. Thought I read where you went with an early stock cam, correct ? Guys will want all the details !!   Be nice to hear how you set up your carbs also as you get into it more.     Eric

I got it out of the box this morning and am putting shiny side covers on and new cam cover and generally making it purdy. I tried to get some pictures of the intake ports as they are really nice.
I'll try again. It started off as a K0 doner engine that was rusted solid so much of the work needed for this motor would likely not apply to most rebuilds. Here's a list of some of what was done to the motor though.

836 Big Bore job w/big pistons.
Valve job with all new guides and valves
New cylinders from another K0
New K1 cam
All new rocker arms, 2 new shafts.
2 newer cam bearings.
New clutch plate, hub, springs, bolts, hub cup washer
Full oil pump rebuild, polished rotors, skimmed side covers.
New transmission bearings and bearing retainers
New final drive bearing
New cam chain tensioner roller, slipper, bearing set.
Repaired-resculpted 6 fins that were chipped, cracked, or broken & gone.
New spark advance
New points, plate, condensers.
New starter
Primary chain tensioner.
New   primary chains
new rod and crank bearings.
Starter clutch rollers and alternator.
Compression 9.5:1
Basically a new motor.

So I'm planning on putting it in a ruby red K1 this weekend but I'll try to keep this thread current. So it will be a K1 with a late  numbered 104... K0 motor just before the K1 switch at 1044.....
So now I'll have a perfectly good K1 motor from the bike I'll need to find a home for.

I've got to break it in because of the new bottom end but I'll include the carb tuning when I get to it.

I'll get more pictures as I go.

evers, the "supplier" is Hondaman. I believe he has 4 motors to do in the Q but you can order one on his web site I believe.

Sounds like a nice strong running, sensible and reliable street set up.Once the carbs etc are dialed in you will be wearing the grin  ;) Sounds like you may be going with some nice stock HM300's hopefully. If so those things will roar.  Did Mark give an estimate to the HP,I would guess maybe close to 80 possibly. ??   Looking forward to updates also.    Eric

It will be noticeably stronger but i doubt it will get near 80HP without port work.... ;)

Yes Mark said  80, maybe low 80s, maybe high 70s -  with the big bore, advance, cam, head work, port work and valve work and quench bands. Ports look really cool too and the combustion chamber I posted on his web site.

Do you have rebuilt carbs to put on it?

Can you tell we are like a bunch of vultures?!
I would like for him to rebuild one of my motors too.

Yes I have a couple sets of K1 carbs and new manifold rubbers so I should be fine. Why do you ask? Do you rebuild them?

No, I was just curious. I read through your list of upgrades twice and it seemed like carbs was the only thing not mentioned.  Hondaman and Digger rebuild carbs.
