Too busy with the mother lode?!

Yup.  Basically, we got this bike to run, and that was enough to know I could stash it away for a while without worrying if the motor ran, or if the turbo was seized, or if I had bought myself a shiny looking turd (I didn't ;) ).  So, in the pursuit of sanity for my dad's workplace, we rolled this bike out of the way, and into the storage shed until I can take some vacation time, or get fired ;D

Oh, Cool!  Did you tell him we got it to run?  He told me he had never had it running when I spoke with him after the sale.

Gentlemen, let me ponder something out loud here...Could this bike have done 175.813 mph on the salt in 1979?  If not, what other Honda in the 500cc class could have?  Steve Alexander's Honda was in class APS-BF, for Special Construction Partial Streamlining - Supercharged Fuel.  I cannot find a picture.

Remember if that had any aerodynamic bodywork, or other mods?  What did it run on?

Salt? ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I scoured the earth, and found a Yoshimura racing magneto set up.

I'm more motivated to get it running smoothly again, as the shop may be running a 350 Benelli single, making a run for that Land Speed Record next year.  Once this turbo is running how it should, we've got access to a dyno, and that should give the best indication of whether or not this bike could have been the record breaker.

WOW!  I got confused. :D  I switched too fast from a thread about land speed records on another forum with similar color scheme to this one.

Plus I hadn't had my caffeine yet.  Still, this was a high water mark of stupidity for me. :)

I'd like to hear what size/type of carburetor you used.  Sounds like a fun bike!

here is the link to it gregg,

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=72590.0

when i first built it , i used a 1.5 inch stromberg carb , a bit like an su carb ,but with a diaphragm . it worked ok on boost ,but the piston on it was so heavy it only lifted about 1/4 inch for 5k rpm ,so v hard to get a good mix off boost .

so i then went to a mikuni i think it was off a yamaha xs 650 twin .this worked well ,the only problem ws getting enough fuel through the float bowl and into the engine .in the end , i took a pipe off the drain plug ,and ran it to a tube mounted in the air flow when the piston lifted high enough . this then bled fuel in as the airflow sucked on it .and took it from 60 to 85 bhp .

robert

That is a cool one Robert!  I have definitely heard letting them get thirsty is a recipe for detonation...

Got tired of ignoring this bike every time I go to the shop, so I pulled the throttle cable to get a replacement made.  Baby steps now...
