Well, I don't mind all this top speed talk, because I'm pretty much convinced this bike (yea, back to my bike now ;) ) was/is capable of that 175.813mph record...which still stands for its class
I sure hope so, it would be awesome for you to put this bike in the books!

Sys, I think this is the bike that already holds that record ;)

Gregg, you really do need to check on the classes and what the letters mean.
I'm almost sure that the class you quoted is not a production class as such. APS-BF.
A is altered which I think refers to the chassis. PS is partial streamlined. B is supercharged or turbocharged. F refers to the type of fuel the bike runs on, in this case it is Nitro not pump gasoline. Alcohol and Nitrous might come into the equation as well.
A good person to ask is Keith Turk, not only does he know more about LSR than most, he is also a CB500 freak. ;D
He's not been on here for some time but it might be worth shooting him a PM, here's his profile. http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?action=profile;u=5583

Sam, thank you for all the info.  I had been basing the 'A' on the lengthened/altered swing arm.  I believe the bike had a fairing on the front, evidenced by the mounts...that's where I get the 'PS' from.  The bike has a turbocharged fuel engine with some kind of special injection...either alcohol or water, therefore the 'BF'.

There's far too large a gap in ownership history to prove anything about this bike.

I need some carburetor opinions for street use.  Is 32mm a decent size, or too big for the street with a 550?  Also, should I go flat, or round slide.  I'm finding Mikunis on ebay for about $100, but there's all sorts of combos, so I'm not sure which direction to go.

gregg ,

on my 400/4 , i used a stromberg , bit like an su but with a rubber diaphragm around the piston . it worked ,but the piston rise from tickover to 4000 rpm was about 5mm ,so not much metering adjutment on the needle profile available .
i then went to a yamaha xs650 twin cv carb , maybe a 32mm can't rmember , this worked well ,but max flow through it with the stock petrol tap ,was about 60 bhp .then lean . fitting a high speed enrichment ,gave me 85 bhp at 8500 then clutch gave up .i think for prolonged use at that sort of power and above i would need a much bigger tank tap .but the carb was good ,and gave me 45 to 50 mpg.

regards
robert

I'd imagine the diameter would have to be somewhat bigger given that stock, each cylinder had a 22mm carb bore to breathe through.   If it even idled wouldn't it severely limit the top end?  There's that other member here with the yellow framed, turboed 550.  Pick his brain and see what he's got.

Bob3050 has a different sized turbo, the one that came with the ATP kit back in the 70's...I think he has the bendix zenith carb that came with the kit..not sure what size they were, but they were modified with bigger jets, and a larger float bowl.

I am going to have another go with the carburetor on this bike.  I have to get a custom throttle cable made, and install the Yoshi magneto system...Then, this bike will purr once again 8)

G'Day Greg, most motorcycle shops (and bicycle shops, for that matter) will sell you a "universal cable kit", which consists of a length of cable that you cut to size, and a couple of different brass "lugs" that you solder on to the ends.

I haven't bought one for a couple of years, but they used to be around 10 bucks here in "Rip Off Land", so probably only a couple of bucks in the US? Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)

Thanks Terry.  After posting that, I got to searching on ebay for universal cables, and found just what I need.  The carb slide has a slot for the enlargened end of a cable, like the K0 carbs have, and the Tarozzi grip end accepts a ball, unlike most Hondas that take that 'barrel'.  I found what I needed for $11, so, SCORE ;D

Well, since my company hasn't made any money yet ;D I still have to work my day job :'(  BUT, I get a few hours this Saturday to spend on bikes at the shop, and I'm planning to focus on this one.  Also, since I've decided this bike will hit the street this summer, I will have to spend some time doing some of those boring things to get an old bike back on the road.

To Do:

Stock length swing arm
Wheel bearings
Steering bearings
Front brakes
Rear brakes
Chain
Clutch cable
Uber simple electronics...probably just a battery that will power a few LED lights for daytime riding...No charging system...(more thought will need to put into this, and advice is appreciated)

I'll get done what I can, and take some pics of the progress.  It will have a different tank until I get the taps on the Benelli tank sorted.

Rolled it back into the shop today...

Removed the rear wheel...

Definitely have clearance issues here for a throttle cable...hmmm.

How I left it...I threw on the KONI shocks that need a rebuild, and I have a stock length swing arm ready to go.

Yes I will, but I have to find the right spanner tool to get them apart.  I tried, and failed miserably yesterday.  Currently getting some help from member 'fire113' AKA Georg from Germany, as he's rebuilt a few sets, and is sending me a pic of the tool he uses.

If your having clearance issues withe cable Dellorto  sells a 90 degree elbow for the top of the carb.
