CB750 won't kick over
« on: February 28, 2012, 07:26:43 PM »
Hey guys!

I'm piecing together a K4. I noticed the engine kick arm will not budge! I can turn the crank over with a 24mm wrench, but no dice on the kick arm. What gives??

There was nothing obvious behind the clutch cover...

Odd...

Could the kicker assm.itself be jammed ?

Be careful turning the crank from the points nut.  There is not a whole lot that is connecting that bolt.  You can easily strip off the little stays on the bolt assy and think that you're turning the crank when you're really just spinning your wheels.  I would check to make sure you are turning the crank.

I appreciate the concern and am aware of the potential risk.. The engine is in neutral and I have the plugs removed, so the engine turns with very little force. I believe I am good, but I probably be better off skipping over to the alternator side.

But I am still scratching my head at this one.......

stuck clutch maybe? anyone? anyone?

I have had many new 750 projects with the stuck clutch syndrome and it does not cause the kicker to stick so scratch that one. Has to be in the mechanism probably.Seems member Sparty once had a problem with his kickstart on a hot rodded engine once, maybe put his name in a search.  Here is a similar problem but no real answer, maybe throw him a PM   http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=100367.msg1123115#msg1123115    Here is one of a few of the Sparty kickstart threads but do not know what the cure was.    http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=33503.0

If I turn the crank, the kick start arm will rotate down freely and return nicely. My gut instinct tells me this problem is a result from something else. If I can get my hands on a clutch tool, I could pull the clutch to rule that out. I know you don't believe that's what the issue is, but it can't hurt to try.

Thanks so much for the links, I will see what Sparty says.

Much Appreciated!
Daniel

A tool for the clutch is nice to have but you can get it off with a screwdriver and other hand tools if needed. Not sure if anything can be seen from the oil pan area but did read a reference to where the kickstart is tied in with the oil pump gear also ??  Hmm
