75 cb400f speedometer question.
« on: February 28, 2012, 08:14:18 PM »
Hello everyone!
A little while ago I was finished with my first cb400f project and tried to sell it to get something else A bit bigger.
while on eBay several people told me that my speedometer is wrong because it only reads 120mph. According to those guys it should be 130. As an honest person I had to add that info and I'm sure it has ruined my sale lol.
Then several people emailed me saying the had 75 400s with speedo exactly. Like mine. What do you guys think? Anyone owned a 400 reading 120? And know for sure it authentic?
in any case I'd like to know if this speedo is original. It only reads like 6800 miles.
Thanks everyone.

Any chance you could supply a picture?

I'm no expert, but I do know my '75 400F had a speedometer that went up to 130, and a tachometer that went to 12K, with the red zone from 10K-11K.

It looks like at least 76 and on was only 120.

What is the build date of your bike? It could be the 75's started with 130 and transitioned to 120 at some point.

This say's 75 but who knows.

Pretty sure CR is right on.  My early 400 four speedos read 130, the latter 120 and I think the 77 model only 100.  Honda changed speedo readings-I think Big Brother didn't want people trying to get to max speed so they pressured the cycle builders to lower the max speed by eliminating the higher readings. At one point the top indicated speed was 80...Larry

Thanks guys! I just didn't want to lie to people. Everything tells me it's original. Bike looked like crap when I got it, but motor didn't have one drop of oil leaks, valves with in specs, clutch is good and doesn't burn any oil at all. This was my learning experience and I want to move on to a next one. May be I'll keep it!
