My old flame...
« on: June 03, 2006, 08:53:42 PM »
Here's a report on my latest "project".

I decided it was time to get my '82 Nighthawk out again, for a season or two.  I have three SOHC/4's but can only register one at a time due to a self imposed limit of four bikes registered at any one time.  Anyway, here's a picture of it as it came out of the "barn".  It needs a new front tire now and probably a new rear befor the summer is over.  The front brakes have stiffened up so I'll have to clean them out again.  The last time I had it on the road it lost the "seal" in one of the fork seals so I'll replace them, too.  I should go ahead and put new brake hoses on while I'm at it, I guess.  A clean up and that's about it.  It started readily on a borrowed battery after I put in some gas.

The only real problem will be finding replacement tires.  Dunlop may or may not be fazing out the Qualifier line, according to rumors around here.  Any other bike and I'd put modern tires on it but this one just needs those raised white letters to look right.

I bought this bike new in the spring of 1983 as a holdover for $1695.00.  The MSRP was about $2500.00 so it was an offer I couldn't refuse.  I was riding a '64 250 Honda scrambler at the time and, man, what a difference.  (BTW, I still have the scrambler, too.  It's disassembled and stored in the attic.)

It's pretty much original (I added the scratch on the tank.)  I've replaced tires, chain, bulbs, etc. and put a new seat on it about ten years ago.

It's a great neighborhood bike and fun to ride on club events, as long as they don't go over about 100 miles at a stretch.  That new seat isn't any better than the first one was.

Nice bike.
I have stopped registering more than 2 bikes a year as I usually
can't get the wife to start learning....she always has a project
going in the house.

Thanks, Rushoid.  I was able to find a replacement OEM tire online so all is well.

if you want quick white letters, get a paint marker like what is used on model cars. I did it to some tires and it looked very good. Wore well also. Aslong as you dont slop the paint on, it should be very easy to do.

Like the bike too. I would certainly put that in my garage. Probably ride it too quite a bit.

Thanks, eldar, I was able to find the OEM Dunlop Qualifier.  It hasen't shipped yet and I've got my fingerrs crossed.  I've seen tire paint sticks in the stores, but never used one.  Someone told me once that awning paint from a sign shop works well, too.  It's rubber based and made to be out in the weather.

bydesign--140K !!!  That's impressive.  When I bought mine I had a choice between the blue or the black one.  With that matching blue frame, there was no contest as far as I was concerned.  I think I'd go with modern radial tires if I couldn't get the originals.

Dumb question here:

Is the nighthawk of the mid '80's (not the newer nighthawk 750 from the 90's) a direct descendant of the SOHC4 bikes we all know and love?  Is this the same as a CB650?

Hi, Jason

The 1982 650 Nighthawk was the last of the SOHC/4 bikes from Honda.

Here's a brief history:

Very nice stock looking Nighthawk. I still like the four muffler version in any models, SOHC or DOHC, like my 1983 CB1000C.

I don't think Nevada have a vehicle registeration limit but I could only afford to regiater 4 at a time anyway. That's why I started to collect more under 50cc motorcycles (I have two 1987 Yamaha YSR50s) because here in Vegas, they don't need to be registered nor insured as long as they are street legal, unless of course if more dumb people keep crashing their 50cc scooters enough to make the politicians change the law!
