It's an about face that I didn't forsee and not the usual way.

I hope you are weathering this storm OK... pictures of homes destroyed in Dexter. Green sky here, lots of lightning in the west.

Just got back from Dexter after checking on my sister. Downtown is all sealed off due to a gas leak, cordoned off by the State Police. Some homes hit just off Dex Ann Arbor Rd. The real damage is north on Territorial Rd. an actual touchdown. Interestingly, rode right by there yesterday on my first ride of the season. A day makes a big difference.

I believe I read recently that DTE had relented and there is an opt out, but there might be some cost to the consumer later on if they had to install it for whatever reason.

We just had ours installed. They [DTE] must of have deemed us special.. they gave us two of them.  ;)

I've apparently had a smart meter installed in the last week, I haven't bothered to go look at it yet, but so far I haven't noticed any problems with it. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Smart meters do more than just detect an outage.  They have a variety of metrics that allow a utility to detect if there is an outage, how often and how much power is being consumed at what times, and other various situations.

PG&E installed Smart meters and there was a lawsuit from somebody who says the RF is giving her constant headaches.  The California Public Utilities Commission chose to allow customers to "opt out", but they have to pay a 5 or 10 dollar premium every month.

As for the meter readers, they are indeed being laid off.  I work for a very large utility in Southern California, and we have eliminated 90% of all of our meter readers due to smart meter installation.  Problem is, the meters still need to be occasionally read manually, so what did the company do?....hire a contract outfit for the reads.

I am personally opposed to these things.  I don't like anybody being able to track what I do in my own home.

Well I agree about the meter readers mate, very sad to see more folks out of work and no reduction in your electricity bills to reflect their savings from cutting 90% of their meter readers either.

Over here we have the most incompetent federal government in Australia's history, and they're about to hit us all with a "Carbon Tax" which is estimated to increase our utility bills by around 20%.

In fact it will increase the cost of just about everything we buy and consume, and some manufacturers have already moved offshore to set up in other countries in the region, which will reduce our dwindling workforce and the amount of people paying taxes and supporting all the folks who lose their jobs due to this new tax. Wonderful. Cheers, Terry. ;D

No, it's not even that mate, we have a minority Labour (Democrat) government who only won the last election with support from the Greens and 3 independents who were promised the world, and are now colecting. The Greens now have control of the senate and the government has to toe the line and do what the Greens tell them to do, or they'll lose their support.

We also have our first female Prime Minister, a self confessed Marxist Communist who gained leadership by knifing the sitting Prime Minister in the back, who has blundered her way from one political disaster to another, including publicly lying to the Australian voters before the last election that no carbon tax would be introduced if she won the election.

We have both federal and state governments here, the Labour government in Queensland was absolutely crushed in last weeks election and it's a pretty good indication of what will happen federally in 2013, but 2013 is still too far away, so there's no telling what madness will be visited upon us by the incompetent fools, liars, dreamers and hippies who currently run this country. Cheers, Terry. ;D

I don't know about charging more, but a while back Dominion Power wanted to do the same thing to us, but it would have been to cut power to the house during the day when no one was home to cut demand from the water heater, tv, etc. As I was working nights, and 8 am to 2 pm were my evenings to veg out and do stuff around the house, I told the guy on my porch with meter in hand wanting to install it to "Go #$%* Yourself!" that is a direct quote punctuated with a slamming door! I never heard from them again!

Ha ha, well I suppose she could argue that Bob Brown is actually leading the government Dave, considering that the Greens have control of the senate, in which case she's not lying............ ?  :o
