I'm looking at getting an 836 kit for my 750 K7 and wondering what kind of performance boost I could expect. I know there are a lot of variables involved but does anyone have any numbers?

My seat of the pants Dyno was that the bike ,with the same gearing, always felt like it was one gear lower than it actually was as far as pulling power. For instance, when I first started riding it and I was in 5th I would catch myself fishing for another gear because it 'felt' like it was in fourth. Def more low end and torque and better acceleration.
Maybe somebody will have some Dyno numbers, strip times etc on a before and after.

I'm willing to bet a sweet porting job by someone like Mreick would net you better results than an 836.

I asked the same question  and got some really good responses.  Check out the Go Fast Engine Ideas thread.

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=98517.0  I think the 836 without anything else adds 8 HP.

A ported head makes all the difference in the world.  Had a 836 with stock head and you could feel the difference but not what I was expecting.  Ported head really woke the motor up and sounds healthier when accelerating.   No horsepower numbers though, numbers on paper can be disappointing so I use my seat of the pants dyno.

... Should at least be about 12%

836-736 = 100
100/836 = .119

But, what do I know?

Porting will improve top end. At low RPM the flow is not high enough to be seriously affected by porting problems. More displacement=more power at low RPM, to really use the bigger displacement you have to open up the breathing - the stock system is restricting the engine at high rpm and open throttle already.

I had a 836cc in my '71 cb750 and it screamed. I think a hotter cam is necessary too. I broke the chain with it, and munched the motor.

Thanks for the information. I'm not doing this to boost performance, but when I got the engine unstuck it was pretty rusty. I tried a deglazing hone but there are still pits so I am looking at boring it out. I can get rings and a head gasket for ~$200 or an 836 kit for ~150 plus about another $160 for boring it out. If I get a little more horsepower out of it all the better.  :)

that's very cheap for boring.  I got the 836 kit from Japan that was discussed on the forum extensively.  Boring was $360.

Here is a link to the $110 836 kit, Hondaman has used a couple and I plan to buy one.
Made in Japan, not cheap Chinese...
