Rebuilding stock 76 750F rear shocks, what weight oil to use
« on: March 01, 2012, 07:55:24 PM »
hey guys, I just rebuilt my forks using atf the other day as recommended by many here

I plan on rebuilding my rear factory sealed shocks

I saw earlier a technique of drilling a hole in the bottom of the shock, letting the oil out, and introducing new oil, and then bleeding the shock to remove air then reseal the hole with a screw to fit the hole that I'll tap into the body

I'm doing this because the stockers seem to cavitate a bit and my costs for the rebuild are skyrocketing and I'm not gonna drop 200 or 300 now for some nice ones

now, I have a bottle of atf, or 5 weight shock oil, or 10 weight shock oil

what to use?

thanks

I'd recommend the ATF...it'll have the same old seals..so 5wt may get past those more than a slightly heavier oil;they have Very hard compression damping even new(O.E.)...so if the seals are "good?" go for the 5wt.....
Personally,I'd recommend a less expensive new pair...or a known, tested, solid used pair.I just sold a pair of O.E.Suzuki 1983' GS850GL rear shocks last summer on Feebay and only got $40 & they were in good condition, they have adjustable rebound damping stock & I made sure they were in good cond. as listed.
75' CB400F/'bunch o' parts' & 81' CB125S modded to a 'CB200S'
I love the small ones too !
Do your BEST...nobody can take that away from you.
