Mullholland Drive corner
« on: February 14, 2012, 07:30:58 AM »
Can someone explain to me why this corner is so bad? The road looks smooth enough so why are the rear wheels slipping out?

Thanks
Andy

I know there is a curve on that road called Carl's Jr. turn that was bad.  People used to go off the cliff there.  I used to play on that road as a kid.  A few times by the Rock Store but mostly over by Laurel Canyon Blvd.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

Are you talking about 'dead man's curve?  Or, something different?  I know the original dead man's curve was re graded so the outside lane didn't slope so badly.

I dunno about dead mans curve as there seams to be plenty of them on many roads.  I am unfamiliar with one called Dead Mans Curve on Mulholland but that is not to say there is not one.  There was one specifically called Carl's Jr. turn back in my youth and that name was used by many.  That is over 30 years ago for me.

At first I thought it had something to do with that darker patch of asphalt, but many of the riders were losing it before and well after that section.  Looks to me like a fast section of road leading into a decreasing radius curve with a slight reverse bank.  You get the best look at the road at the 1:37 and 2:47 marks in the video.

Agreed.  He really should have had his flip-flops and Corona tank top on for that kind of riding. ;D
