My chain lost its master link
« on: May 31, 2006, 01:01:51 AM »
I was just cruising along at 30mph and heard noises and my engine died. I'm lucky it didn't happen at high speed, and I was only about 50yrds from my house, but this really sucks. Jimmy

I bent the edges of the hole back out so they wouldn't contact the trans(?) gears and JB welded the piece and all the cracks. I used rtv between the cases. Today I rode it a little and I didn't see any oil leaking, so I guess it's good for now. I also installed a 17 tooth countershaft sprocket from a 550(stock on mine is 18) so the bike should be a little quicker. Jimmy

Jimmy, by installing the 17 tooth sprocket you have geared the bike down, it will be a little slower but it will accelerate faster.

On the early models, Honda fitted smaller sprockets front and rear and had your problem from the outset.

They changed to larger sprockets to slow the chain speed down, this made the chains last longer, but if you don't look after it or use old master links or cheap chain the problem will not go away.

While you were down there did you safety wire the master link?

I'd rather ride a Yamaha than eat worms.

One of the motors I am running has one of those lovely air conditioning vents  ;D No problems so far. Leaks a little but no major problems  ;)
