fuel tank removal
« on: May 30, 2006, 10:40:57 AM »
Hello gang, got some questions about my 74 750

Im going to be replacing my broken throttle cable soon which will require me removing the gas tank.  I have never done this before, although from searching through the site and reading my manual its sounds pretty easy.  From what i gather all i need to do is:

1.  Turn petcock to off position.
2.  Remove hose from petcock.
3.  Open up the seat.
4.  Yank off the tank.

Let me know if im missing any important steps here, its OK to leave fuel in the tank right?

Also, anything out of the ordinary i should know about replacing my throttle cable?  It is the non-return cable, im not sure what its actully called.  The one that connects to the top part above the carbs.

Just want to make sure i dont screw anything up before i get started on this,

Thanks,
CJ

Tank removal is easy..you've got all the steps...It fits over two brackets in the front and under a rubber grommet in the back, just wiggle it back and lift up...gas in is fine as long as your petcock doesn't leak. I usually set it somewhere (like the edge of a table or workbench) so that the petcock hangs over the edge so you don't damage it. Also, be careful of your wiring. your whole harness goes under the tank on its way to the headlight.

3. Open up the seat.
3.1 Ease the rubber tank mount back
3.2 Lift rear of tank clear of frame
3.3 Pull backwards (to the rear) and free from front mountings
3.4 Exclaim (politely) how heavy a tank full of petrol (gas) is...
3.5 Gently place somewhere safe.

To replace tank, slide it forwards onto the rubber lugs (easy when you see them)
Stretch rubber mount over rear
Connect fuel hose

How true. First time I did it with a full tank, I thought, damn, er.. darn this thing is heavy.  ;D

Plus, if you lift it up too fast you'll probably chip the paint at the very front top of the tank. Don't ask.  :-[

3.5 Gently place somewhere safe.

Please take carefull note of this step.

Do not put it on a workbench or other flat surface with an extension cord or other dangly thing under it that you can catch/trip on as you walk by dragging the tank off the bench and onto the floor.

Now who would do that!

Time is short!

I keep one of those plastic milk crate-like storage containers around for the tank. If you sit it caty-cornered, it's stable and the petcock sits inside the sides.

Also, replace both throttle cables if they're the same age.  And don't forget to lubricate the cables before installing.

Install inline fuel filters and new fuel line while you have the tank off.

Check new cables to see if they are nylon coated (the actual cable itself inside the sleeve). Irecently changed a clutch cable with nylon coating and was expressly told not to lubricate it. I can't say for certain that newer throttle cables are coated or not but it may be worth checking.
