Tiller - my shame
« on: March 04, 2012, 08:23:01 AM »
We got front tine tiller from somebody, the transmission on it died and I spent a winter to build new one. Than the engine seized. I was ready to replace the engine but pulling the head there was nothing wrong with it
Long story short it was just low on oil, it runs just fine once I got it moving with oil replenished.

I feel like an idiot for letting it run out of oil:)

'S ok.  Did that to a brand new sprayer once.  Not as pricey as your tiller, but still.  I felt like a total moron.  :P

DON'T LET IT HAPPEN AGAIN!

You guys will love this story.  I'm at a local lawn equipment parts place one day, and their service writer was dealing with a guy with a dead, but new mower that came from a big box store.  And apparently, this was his second one.  It was locked up.  The dipstick was dry.  The service writer pointed to the dipstick/filler and asked "Did you put oil in it?", and the guy said, "Yeah, but not in there.  In here.", and pointed to the air filter housing"!!!

I work at one of those big box stores. It is amazing how many gas powered devices come back because the starter pull is "locked up" after a short period of operation. The oil comes in the box and there is clearly a sign that says install oil before starting but way too many buyers have special motors that don't require oil :P :P :P  The oil in the air chamber is a new one, though...Larry

The dumbest!!!
I had a friend a few years back and his GF was BLOND(sorry). They had an old beater that had a small oil leak. The guy checked the oil before the GF had to drive 40 miles to town so he told her to pick up some oil and put it in the car!!
About a week later the GF is going to work (40miles) and the engines just locks solid. The BF shows up to rescue the GF and checks the oil and finds it completely EMPTY!! WTF??? I thought I told you to get some oil and put it in the car!!! AND she says I DID, IT'S RIGHT HERE IN THE BACK FLOORBOARD!!!>
DOH!!!

There's a certain type of person, not raised with or inherent of any mechanical common sense, who can sort of be forgiven for this kind of thing because it is just so far out of their experience of life.  They just don't know any better and probably don't care to.

However, for a guy like me, or the OP, who are at least mechanically aware if not adept (talking about myself, because I don't know the OP at all) where really, all you can do is chalk it up to a moment of idiocy and laugh it off.

I was tuning up my brother-in laws 360 honda and we watched the new next door neighbor futzing with a lawn mower. When we were done we walked over and offered help, I asked if he had ever worked on a lawn mover before. He replied, I never had a lawn before! Moved from Chicago and no, he hadn't poured in the oil yet good thing he didn't get it started either. We gave him a quick course on lawn care equipment. He became a good friend.
