More rain...but a much happier bike.
« on: June 04, 2006, 10:09:28 PM »
This week/weekend our little island was drenched in yet more rain, but that didn't stop me from throwing up my temporary shelter (ie, tarp) and banging away on the bike.

Since getting the bike a few weeks ago here's what I've found:

- the carbs needed a pretty healthy cleaning
- the valves were improperly adjusted (the lock nut for cyl #4 was ready to spin off...)
- the timing was off by about 15 degrees
- the electronic ignition was only sporatically flaming up the coil for cyl #2&3

Thankfully when I bought the bike the owner threw in a box with the points, plate and point cam (I guess thats what it would be called..) After putting the points back on the bike, static timing it and then using a strobe to fine tune, the bike runs approximately 3,000,000% better (my math may be off on this figure)

Today was the first day I was able to take the bike out for a good run (between rain storms), and oh man was it a good run. The only things to sort out now are an occasionally sticking float on #1, picking up some new throttle cables (some previous owner managed to kink the return cable) and a baffle-less exhaust. When I can get my hands on a carb sync., I'll be doing that as well.

While doing my test ride, my father was able to tell exactly which gear I was in as I raced around the lake. Oh yeah, she's a loud bike.  ;D

I also changed the oil, adjusted the brakes, adjusted the clutch, adjusted the cam chain, replaced the headlight and did a few other niggly things.

A big thanks to everyone on the forums for their past and present posts, they helped a heck of a lot!

She's gonna be a nice runner for the summer,  :)

Sounds like its all coming together Rob  ;D - and  you lucky dog, you have some of the best  motorcycling roads around out there on the little island :D   Are the cavalcades of motor homes out yet?

We're definately starting into the right season for motorhome madness, thank goodness none of them take Munns road. If there are any, I'm sure they can hear me from far enough away to give ample warning,  :)

I'm guessing by your name that you've got a good size like to rip around? It's like having a track with some exceptional turns, except you wouldn't want to pit in the centre unless you enjoy dragging a bike out of 20 feet of water,  :D

no lake right nearby, username is from another site about restoration of old wood/canvas canoes. Not much for twisties here in Sk., but we have 20,000K of paved straightaways ;D

right you are Eldar. Thinking maybe a big fairing and hard bags might be good for the type of riding around here. But have to finish the projects Phase 1 first..

Hey, I'll be riding through Sask this summer, but unfortunately not on my CB! Anything neat to see that isn't usually listed in the guide books? It's also unfortunate that I'm going with three other people and we're trying to make it to Montreal in 10 days, so time is short,  :-\ I'm hoping to sway everyone into letting me whip us over to Niagra Falls to the motorcycle museum though,  ;)
