Hi there.  I just wanted to post a quick introduction. 

I recently bought my first motorcyle, a 1972 CB750 that has been mixed lightly with a 1978 CB750 SuperSport (swing arm, fork, wheels and brakes).  You can see pics here.  I plan on giving it a bit of the "cafe" treatment over the next month or so.

I have ridden a few times before, but have never owned a motorcycle.  I am very happy with this one.  Just put on a new chain, and installed a new battery, and it's running great.  After it's well warmed up the RPM's tend to stay high, but after reading in the tech forum I see that I may need to adjust my idle speed lower (It will idle when cold with about half-choke on) so I'm hoping that's it.

I live south of Boston about 20 miles in a little town called Abington, and I had my first ride on it this past Saturday - we had a two hour break in the rain, and I got a good hour and half of riding in.

Today I braved I-93 to ride in to work, and I managed to not get killed, or even nearly killed.  We'll see how the commute home goes.

Glad to have you aboard.. the board  ;). Nice pictures. The speedo only set-up is interesting. Did you do that or did you get the bike that way? Guess I would feel funny not having a tach.

Hello mate and welcome.  Looks like a top bike you've picked up there.  It never ceases to amaze me how available these things are over your side of the Atlantic!  And a first bike!  Here you'd be stuck on a 125 until you pass a test and then limited to 33bhp for two years.  Luckily I passed my test 30 years ago!!

Glad to see you've used the Gallery.

What's with the "Gibeon" handle?

Do you think these restrictive measures help, in what I assume is an attempt to reduce accidents, injuries, etc?

It came that way.  I do have a tach and another speedo that are in an original bracket which I bought at online auction (can we say eB** here?).  I need to get me a tach cable before I install it though.  I would probably prefer a tach and no speedo to the the way it is now.

Tacho-schmacko.  If the engine is screaming but nothing is happening, hopefully it's valve-float before detonation. Just turn the gas down a little or shift up.

Check the age of your tires. Too many people are ready to go ice skating on rubber that has tread. Just my worry, maybe.

Right now I'm on a permit (which I've actually had since April of '05).  I can ride during daylight hours only, and cannot carry a passenger.  I have the option to either take a driving test on the motorcycle (where a state trooper on a bike follows me around), or I can take a two day riding class - which if I pass will automatically upgrade my permit to a license.  I don't know what the restrictions are for more youthful riders (I'm 31).  The riding class I'm planning to take next month is $250 and they use 250cc bikes for training - NightHawks and Rebels I believe.

The 750 (size wise) seems to be working fine for me as I am huge and weigh about half what the bike does.  Also, without having a tach, I don't run the rpm's nearly up into the powerband as I might once I install the tach.

Gibeon became my online "name" many years ago and now it's just easier to remember for the various boards I belong to - there're a LOT of David Hansen's in the US and very very few Gibeon's.

Roger the valve-float - however, I'd prefer to get at least one season out of the engine before having to rebuild anything. The tires are good for now, but I do want to put some new ones on.  Any recommendations?

depends on your budget

bridgestone makes good tires as do most. I use spitfire s-11s front and back they work very well and were fairly cheap.

OK. We have that here too if you are 25+ called "Direct Access". You do the course, take the test and then zoom off on your superbike.  Mostly you see them around on CB500 Twins.

We had Kymco Venox 250's.  Either I suck at tight turns - which is likely - or they had the turning radius of the Queen Mary.  My 550 seems MUCH more nimble than that boat.  Still, it was exhilarating just riding something, even if it was only tooling around a parking lot.  Glad I ended up with my CB though.

                The way I see it is, they (350-750) are SOHC4s and that's all that matters. Sharp looking
                ride you have there and it sounds like you are already on your way to doing it your way.
