Painting my 77 sohc
« on: March 09, 2012, 07:02:55 AM »
I am starting the paint project on my 77 550F Antares red.  I am using the two part spray with the matching primer and clear coat.  Does anyone have some advice to a painting novice?  Should the decals be under or on top of the clear coat.

Is that a rattlecan or spray gun paint. Search for fisheye or orange peel and do everything needed to avoid this syndrome. Usually caused by silicone or other contaminent and can ruin a paint job fast. If you plan on keeping the decals than an overcoat would look nice if you use some mist sprays first to set them in before going too thick. Sure lots of others will chime in soon.

Yeah, I painted my 550 last year and basically followed this sequence of youtube videos: Super Easy Case Painting Guide - Part 1

They are for a computer case, but it applies to any paintjob. I found it very good and 1 year later still have good paint! I put my vinyl stripes on last (after a ton of clearcoat and lots of dry time) and then clear coated on top of them.

The only thing I wish I had done different was clearcoated even more. You can never have too much clearcoat.

Good Luck

Up until this paint job: I had never held a spray gun. Tack Cloth and Prepsolve will be your best friends. That ninja decal is under the clear the rest is all done with paint.
