Ditching pods, alternative to buying a new airbox?
« on: March 11, 2012, 03:31:48 PM »
I bought a 77 550k with pods on it. I've heard these are not a good idea so i want to put a stock airbox on it. Problem is ebay doesnt have any complete airboxes, and the almost complete ones are $100+

I looked through the tips and tricks to find any ideas, but nothing. Am I stuck forking out the money? Or is there something I can build to solve the "pod Problem"

"not a good idea" is incorrect.  plain and simple.

if the pods filter air and don't allow crap in your carbs and engine, then they are not a bad idea.  how does the bike run now?  if it ain't broke, don't fix it.  if it has a racing idle or seems to be running lean, then consider the stock airbox.  the only reason people on here advocate the stock box is for an easy tune.  that doesn't mean the carbs are easy to get on and off at that point though!   ;)

i like my pods, but i'll probably take it back to the stock filter and box because its still running lean after jetting.  i know where to find a cheap stock filter, the jets aren't as easy to find.

Pods are a compromise,  without correct size velocity stacks and the still air the airbox provides they will NEVER work as well as the stock airbox on the stock Honda carbs.

How does the bike run now? Well....it doesnt. Just bought it and am getting it road ready after sitting several years. This is just a budget commuter bike/ toy for me so I'm not trying to spend a ton of money. Thats what the R6 is for...

Anyways, I didNT mean pods were bad, as they obviously have their place. Just meant from what I read they were bad for me. Not interested in re jetting or anything. I think ill just search for a stock box

That comment was not a comparison to the box... I was pointing out that pods are not inherently bad like some here would like everyone to believe... Thank you for helping me make that point.

Pods are filters, your carbs and motor like filters = not "bad"

One thing @ a time. Do you know why it's not runnin? Is it possible PO already had it set up right? Or that there's no reason to worry about rejetting or replacing the stock airbox? Since you're doing it on a budget, see what you've got first. Then worry about replacin stuff once you know what need to be replaced. Just my 2 cents

Just finished the carb rebuild. Im waiting for a proper year petcock to show up on my doorstep so I can get fuel to the carbs. Hopefully will be running this week then I can see what I have. I guesss I was being preemptive by ditching the pods and getting a stock airbox. If you saw the condition of the bike when I got it you would highly doubt anything was set up properly..

understood, both my new-to-me ATVs are like that... my 250r had wax all over the swing arm and chain, I asked the PO what that was all about.  he said a friend told him to use paraffin wax, so he melted a candle all over the chain.   ???  dumbass

Xylene chews up paraffin like a boss.  Not sure what it will do to paint.  It also likes to destroy rubber...like the bottom of your shoes...
