Dumb DMV question
« on: March 07, 2012, 11:16:37 AM »
If I show up at DMV to take the road skill test - I have only learner's permit - alone and on motorcycle, am I in trouble since I am not supervised by a person at least 21 with M license?

Do I need to present a buddy with M license to be allowed to take the skill exam?

Probably depends on the person doing the test.  When I got mine the trooper just gave me a disapproving look and then we went about the test.

In our state if you pass the written you can ride to the course no problem. there are other stipulations like no riding after dark, no passengers, things that make sense. Once you pass the road test you're golden to do all the above.

Or you could take the MSF riding course, pick up some useful information and get your 'M' on their bikes.

Most states will give a hall pass for you to ride from HOME TO TAKE EXAM. Here in NC they did have a learners permit that you could LEARN on for 18 months and if you haven't LEARNED enough you could renew, I don't think there was any max times you could renew!! They have now dropped that and requires everyone to attend and PASS a MSF course before you can get a M/C license.
You can find out what days they give the riding test and go down and watch other riders to see what you'll need to practice on!!

HOW are you going to learn if you can't ride on the street . The riding test here is just more of a skills test.

your allowed to ride...just not alone...

You must be supervised by a person at least 21 years of age who is licensed to operate a motorcycle, who is alert and able to assist you and is supervising from a separate accompanying motor vehicle.

Yeah, I red what they say, I was just wondering how serious are they about it.  I have 30 000 + miles experience from Europe- France, Germany, Austria, Czech Republic of course, valid M license from Czech Police and international M to go with it - I just need to get through this learners permit test.

I hope I am skilled enough for it, LOL!

Probably will ask a buddy to meet me at DMV, he didnt touch motorcycle for 30 years, but he has a valid M and he can supervise me.  I just love the stupidity of burocrats.

In NY, you have to bring both a friend with an "M" license, the motorcycle and a car. They give you a wireless headset to wear under your helmet, and your friend drives the DMV tester. They follow you around on the streets and give you commands on where to turn, pull over, etc.

For $100, MSF will be the "friend" and provide the car and an automatic scooter. That's the easy way to go. But it's a #$%* -- the DMV guy is a hard ass and flunked about half the guys there for things like turning too wide or moving over too early or too late before a turn or not craining their neck far enough.

I passed. Woohoo. My old "M" California license that expired 15 years ago (and wouldn't transfer automatically to NY) wasn't really going to cut it with an NY cop.

Holy crap, sounds like the NY police and DMV people are like tha damn Stazi.  ::)

They have a DMV guy at the MSF tests in NY? We just had our MSF instructors to pass or fail us here in KS, no DMV flunky involved at all.

Most states give you a card to give the instructors and you do not even have to take the test.  In NC you take the card to the DMV they take your picture and you are on the road.  The State safety course cost $100 and I learned alot and polished my slow speed skills.  If you take the riding test it is much easier on a lightweight dirt bike. Do not take a Harley or some other heavyweight.  My 550F went through the training with no problem.

wont you have to go into the DMV before the test? i ask because in that case no one would see you pull up alone. if asked just say your co rider didnt want to wait around....
leaving if you failed might be more difficult.

Here in Indy I rode to the ABATE test site and took thier course and tested right there on the course.  Only went to DMV to get the license issued and photo taken.

That's probably a better all around test of your riding skills on the street than the "parking lot" test we do. You never go over 15mph or ride around other vehicles.

When I got my license back in 1980, Iowa would set up a course in a parking lot with cones for slalom, keyhole, etc. sections.  Most people had someone bring in a little Trail 70 Honda automatic to take the test.  I, of course, couldn't follow convention and rode my F1 in to take the test.

Failed the first time when I bumped a cone on the slalom section with my foot.  Came back the next week and passed the slalom, but had to put my foot down in the keyhole section.  The instructor looked at me and said, "You're going to keep coming back until you pass with that bike, aren't you?"  When I answered in the affirmative, he signed off that I passed and I got my license.  Nice guy.

Should have gotten the course dimensions and practiced back then, young and dumb....

Motorcycle Safety course is not required to take your test in NC, although it would be a really great idea to make it required IMHO.  permit is now only good for 12 months with 1 renewal for 6 months.  After that you have to get your license to continue driving.

after taking the moto saftey course here in CA i was frightened by just how bad some new riders are on their bikes. I am by no means an expericened rider, yet received the only perfect score in the class (very generous judges). If I were in charge of that class only 25% would have passed, for their own saftey.
half the class would have been a menace to themselves on a bicycle
