Sean I think the front sprocket will work, just use thick washer and loctite the bolt
the early style sprocket has a raised center on both sides, the 77/78k sprocket is flat on one side making it overall thinner.   The result of all this is, is that when you mount the early sprocket as you say, you lose the sprockets ability to wobble, it would be mounted extremely rigidly.  I don't know how important this is.  Pic shows 77/78k sprocket on the right.

A lot of bike sprockets on transmission do not float. Wont matter if rear sprocket is lined up. If you have access to a surface grinder, take one side off.
As far as Tugboats bike goes, I would check chain alignment.. 80 % chance it is out.  If it is not , then something is bent.
Alignment should be checked on any bike..

What do you mean? I offset in the back, and the "shoulder" on the older-type front sprockets is within tollerence per Hondaman's post above.

...o.k., wow, this stuff is interesting...I guess I will try just using the early k front sprocket bolted solid to the 77/78k countershaft...I will keep an eye on how it's doing for many miles...

Tugboat, you need around 10mm ofset on the back.. you took a late style holder (would have worked with flat stock sprocket) that had 10mm offset, but cut 7mm off leaving 3mm offset.  Now you added an offset sprocket PLUS 3mm. I assume the sprocket has a 10mm offset ( coorect me if wrong), that plus 3mmm makes 13... If your offset is7mm on the spreocket, you are in the right spot..

Went back to the stock carrier, so the 10mm offset of the rear sprocket compensates for the 10mm offset front sprocket on the 77K motor. Stock spacers and everything else. Lines up correctly. Putting on an o-ring chain tonight and will post pics of the clearance.. should be around 7mm.
