1980 CB750F for free!
« on: March 14, 2012, 12:50:30 PM »
I was just offerred a 1980 CB750F for free-"take it away". The carbs are apart, it ran when it was parked  :P and is complete with small Honda bags and a Shoe fairing. I told him I'd take it of course. I don't know much about these but it seems it could be made into a daily rider easily. Anybody have any experience with these bikes?
Thanks,
Cliff.

Yes,  worked on many back in the early 80's.  Decent bikes, smooth with good power, and would make a fine daily, vintage rider.  Recollection is the valve cover gasket was expensive and of course there are shims rather than adjusters...Larry

I had one of those in the mid 90's. After some gearing, a pipe and jetting, that bike was quick for what  it was. I surprised a lot of the later model sportbikes of that time. Just pay attention to the rod and main bearings- replace them immediately if you intend to keep the bike. Bottom ends are not as strong as the SOHC's in my opinion but still nice rides.

That's not going to happen. If that's the case it becomes a boat anchor and I got what I paid for.

You didn't mention the mileage Cliff but if it has not had the crap run out of it I think you will be fine down low. The valves are more difficult to adjust with the shims and it will have 2 cam chains which are imprtant on these to keep adjusted correctly along with good oil. Think that year of 750 was putting out 75 HP so you will feel a difference and can kind of ride it a little harder than your other "good' bikes. The suspension will also feel like a nice upgrade also compared to the SOHC's.I have a 900F which is basically the same frame etc with a bigger engine. I think you will like it,especially at that price  ;)

Please don't let my comments scare you off- after all, it is a Honda and that means reliable and long lasting in my book. No way i would pass this deal up if i were you- they make nice bikes. Wish i still had mine and would buy another for the right price. Like it was said, as long as it wasn't dogged out, those bearings could last for a long time. I will say that the other thing to be aware of is the charging system- typically the stator fails which takes out the rectifier.

I get it tomorrow and looking forward to it. It's old enough to qualify for a "Collector" licence plate which means cheaper insurance and having "several", as the program specifies, collector bikes the licence plate can be moved from bike to bike. When I ride one of the K1's I worry too much about where I park them. Plus you can never get away from it what with all the people asking questions about it. You know what that's like! I want to be able to have a spirited ride and park it without someone getting too interested in it. I may have to find a stock exhaust system. The parts for the DOHC's seem quite cheap compared to the SOHC's. The DOHC's became the UJM - Universal Japanese Motorcycle - pretty quickly. Nothing wrong with that but they lack the originality and stunningly good look of all the SOHC's.
I've heard about the stator issue and now read that they have had issues with cam chain failure. I've also seen pictures of the carbs in pieces! Wow!  Something to watch out for.
I have to keep my OCB in check though.  ::) I have a tendacy to get carried away and still have a couple of projects to complete too.
Thanks for all the replies guys!
Cliff.

Yeah Cliff try not to go overboard on that one  :) You do Great work but this one will be great for you to just go out  and thrash around on and have no worries. As mentioned if its up to snuff I think you may be pleasantly surprised. Neighbor,a parts seller, had one I would 'borrow' now and then. Wish he was still alive,Son found him dead in bed on Christmas morning a few years ago.  :-[

Thanks Eric. It's rated at around 75 hp so it should be fun. I'll post some pics when I get it home.
Christmas morning? Jeez!

Note on the parts diagram there is listed a chain A and a chain B. Also note part #7 and #11-two tensioners.   http://www.cheapcycleparts.com/model_years/47-honda-1980-750-super-sport-cb750f/assemblies/203

Thanks guys! First thing is to assemble the carbs and see how it runs. It does turn over easily so it's not stuck. oil is clean. The license plate is from 2001 so it's been parked for a long time. Good tech info on the Deuces Wild site, thanks. Still have to finish my K0 so this one will be: get it running, clean the hell out of it, inspection to see what it needs, then add up the costs. Since it was free I have a huge jump on the costs already. I can't believe how long it is between the seat and the handlebars compared to the SOHC 750's.
Cliff.
