Battery Result.
« on: March 15, 2012, 10:49:18 AM »
Here's a pic of my car battery that has sat for over 2 years untouched in my garage. At times temps were well below 0c.
I charged it up for a week on trickle, boosted it for a day then trickled it again.
I connected an indicator bulb for a round 4 hours before I took this picture.

Frankly I'm astonished.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

Storing on concrete may be worse than cold. You should put a scrap of plywood or 2x4's under it.

Jeez, has THAT old myth endured.

Modern battery's (since the 60's) are encased in non-porous insulating material from the factory.  Adding another insulating material like wood, is superfluous.

Also, cold does not physically harm a battery so long as the electrolyte doesn't freeze and expand.  In fact, cold makes it last longer as chemical activity reduces with the temperature.  Storing it cold is better for it than storing it hot.

Perhaps there is some confusion, as what reduces the chemical activity, also reduces capacity/voltage while cold.

Think about it.  The battery is filled acid and metal plates.  Hot acid is more active/agressive than cold acid.  Which do you think is better for plate longevity?

Cheers,

You mean I can stop storing my batteries on a short piece of 2X6 sitting on a stack of old tires? ;D

In one community people used to fly out and the Airport became a repository for cars of people that never returned. Well I guess that can be everywhere in Alaska. Months and some years of cold, many would crank right over.

I've had many a old batterys that have sat for long durations OUT in the cold that will still show 12 volts after a bump charge but wouldn't even kick the starter once. What really counts are the CCAs still available from that black box full of acid.
I think most cars (4CYL) takes about 700 CCA to spin the starter but M/Cs don't take anything near that. You can also have a dead cell and it will still show 12v of power. PUT it in your car and see if it will start it!!!

24 hours later and the voltage is down to 4v so the battery is stuffed.  :(
