Yet Another "What's it Worth?" Question...
« on: March 15, 2012, 06:48:23 PM »
It is certainly not that I WANT to sell my CB - especially since I am just now getting the thing to run right after spending 5 years working on it - but money has gotten tight and my wife and I are looking around for ways to cut costs. I was unemployed last fall and my new job does not pay as much as my old one. All the while our bills have remained the same and our savings is going away... but I digress... The last time that we were in a financial bind I sold my other CB, and it helped, so now I'm dipping my toes into the water again. :(

Anyway, here are the details, tell me what you think:

1978 CB750K - Cafe
- K2 Gas tank
- Cycle X 850 OB Kit
- Webcam 63B Cam
- Stage II Porting on head
- HD Springs
- HD Cylinder Studs
- Optical Ignition
- '89 Katana Front end
- Gordon Frame Kit
- Cafe Seat
- Electronic gauges
- 4 into 4 custom, stainless, repackable, Benji's PeaShooter exhaust (This alone cost me $1200.00)
- One of Tintop's Anti-Pod Air Filters

I've got about $6000 into the bike and 5 years of time. I KNOW there is no way I could get that much out of it, but do you all think I would be crazy asking $3500 O.B.O.? $2500?

I don't know... Figured I would throw it out there to the brain trust.

Did you paint the engine yourself? Black and red are the colors? What kind of paint did you use? any chips? are the big engine screws red ?

if you were selling it down by me (brooklyn ny) i would say 2500-3000 but it might take 30+ days to sell. Of coarse high miles might lower it a bit.

Engine enamel for the engine, regular auto paint for the rest. Frame, swingarm and rims were powder coated. All still pretty fresh with no chips. Not professional job, but I don't mind being seen with it, either.

K8's are not the most valuable CB's and most of the mods you have really don't increase value, save the exhaust.  How and when do you plan to sell?  Is it in good running cond? Any isues?
Springtime and eBay could be best, maybe $3K? Take some great pics. You can certainly ask $3500....
Yeah, let's see the Monster!

Yeah, let's see the Monster!

what do you mean most of his mods dont increase the value? Ported head, new cam, big bore, better fork, and the gorgeous new exhaust! These are some fairly intensive mods, and getting it all working together well through jetting etc.. is another accomplishment as well.

as much as I know these builds never make their money back, I really would hope you could get 4k for it! If not and you are more interested in getting some of your money back it might make sense to put on another exhaust and sell the Benjie on ebay..

Look at recent sales on eBay, original, low mileage, non-modded bikes always sell for the most money.
Don't get me wrong, it is a sharp bike and I like K8's, I have one and wish it was worth $5K!

Springtime is bike time!  I'd list it on eBay with a huge reserve and see what kind of bids you get.

I have been doing this for about 35 years. At first made the same mistake you have. That is put more money in it than it is worth. But there is a sucker born every day good luck. You may find some young dumb ass with more money than brains. You are the one that has to live with what you do.

+1 on listing with a big reserve.  What's that worst that will happen?  It doesn't sell and you relist with a lower reserve.  Why not give it a shot?

be patient and write a big description of the work you did, you need to separate it from all the "Cafe" bikes that people simply added pods and clubman bars on and are likely still riddled with unknown issues. Also Lots of really good and big pictures go a long way. Good luck... though I dont think you should sell it either hehe

Absolutely. Try to keep that CB750 you'll regret it.

Well, there's always the chance that some will say, "I'll give you two grand for the cafe plus trade you my old Honda as well. It needs some work, but should be worth $500 or so..."  ;D If you're gonna dream, dream big, right?  ::)

Trust me, I certainly don't want to go this route. I'm just looking at some options.

Don't think I would want to trade my CB750 for your Duc,think we were just thinking of a way for you to get out of debt.
