So which is period correct?
«

So I'm looking to update my crummy old exhaust to a new (and cheap) Mac 4-1 system. I concerned about them fitting properly (cb750k3) so I have been looking at tons of pictures and I can not figure out what is stock and original. My bike's exhaust has finned clamps that tighten around exhaust ports. However, almost EVERY picture I've seen has the exhaust bolted to the engine directly? So what's the deal? Which is the original set up? When did it change? Just trying to learn as much as I can and didn't find any other threads on the topic. And will the Mac 4-1 set up work with my clamp set up?
And.... Discuss....

the spigots that your original exhaust clamp onto unscrew(if your lucky or good with an impact driver)from your cylinder head and the new mac exhaust simply bolts in place without the spigots...I think most period 4into 1 exhausts still used the spigots, so I guess that no the MAC exhaust is not truly period correct

Hmmm interesting. Guy from Niche Cycle told me over the phone that it would use my exsisting clamps... This why I'm never sure what to buy...

I find it a bit odd that someone wants to be period correct with a Mac exhaust. Maybe some of the other exhausts but not a Mac. Just my two cents worth.
Just bolt 'em on and go.

I know Mac is not period correct, I'm green, but not that green... The original question was more just curiosity on what handa originally did... So that original questions still stands. I would love period correct exhaust, someday...

Depending on the age of the exhaust you get will probably determine the connection type you will use. The Mac 2-1's that were on Satin originally used the finned ones. The 4-1 I put on her bolted on and did not use the finned ones. But the the 2-1's still used the stock headers so naturally it used the finned ones.
What, how, where and when it all changed for Mac exhausts is beyond me.

I would prefer it use my clamps because I'm sure getting the exhaust ports off is going to be a huge pain in the ass... Was hoping to throw em on and ride...

If you still have your spigots that is as original as you will get unless you find some nice stock pipes or your old original headpipes are going into a 4-2.. Lots of 70's aftermarket still used those spigots but nowadays with those original bolts or screw being in there so long to take those spigots off is a risk. Broke bolts are A DRAG---

That's my biggest concern... Any recommendations on budget exhaust that will work with my spigot set up? Considerered getting some 4-2 mufflers but my headers are really rusty and I can't get to my oil filter housing...
