Are my carbs good?
« on: May 27, 2012, 04:33:54 PM »
I'm working on my carb sync and am not sure if I should keep tuning or if I have them set. I have stock needles (on the richest notch), stock jets, drag pipes, and foam unipods soaked in K&N oil.

I had the mixture screws at 1.5, but it seems happier when I set them at 2.5. At 1250 rpm (the idle screw is all the way out), I get 18 cm/Hg +-1.

Should I try to back the idle mixture screws more? How am I to know that I have good settings? Also, I don't seem to need to choke at all for starting. Does this mean I need to take the needles down a notch?

The amount of vacuum isn't important. What is important is that the four carbs are pulling equally. As far as the mixture screws and clip position... what do your plugs say? Do plug chops!

Too much missing information again.

OK...
CB550K 1975
Exhaust- Drag pipes.
Intake-Uni-foam soaked in K&N oil.
Idle jet #38 stock
Main jet #100???
Needle position-Clip on the very bottom groove.
Mixture -2.5

When syncing carbs do not change the mixture screws ,only the slide needle height adjustments.

I am not surprised that the mixture screw is out so far.
The stock idle jet is very small.

Can you tell us the main jet stock size. I forget.
I would move the needle clip up one notch.
The needle on the slide makes very profound changes with each notch.

No point in doing plug chops until it runs decent in the shop.
Needs to have good throttle response, and idle before it goes on the road.

It was at notch leaner but I had some popping and I thought it should be more powerful, so I changed it a notch while I was doing the cleaning. Stock jets are 98.

I couldn't find a socket that I could get in to my inner two plugs. And let's face it, I'm lazy and I don't want to go through the hassle of plug chops. Somebody said the color of the two I could get out were pretty close to what you want.

I did synch the carbs before I messed with the idle mixture. I read from other folks that switching to the pods (mine came that way so spare me the speech) made it where the screws needed to be out further.

I had the screws at 1.5 cause that is where you are supposed to start. I don't really understand how to find the right spot for them. I'll probably ride it for the summer and maybe try changing the needles back up a notch if I don't like it/have problems. I've had the bike in the garage too long and am ready to ride as soon as the clutch cable comes in the mail Tuesday.
