I am so incredibly happy right now, first start attempt.
« on: May 18, 2013, 11:08:03 AM »
After a couple years of working on and off I finally tried to start the bike. Here is what ensued.
First attempt

A few questions......
Does this sound like it should without the pipes on it?
Should this much smoke come out first time?
And it seemed like #4 wasnt getting warm like the others but I think it may have started firing right before i turned it off, could this be normal at first?
I put new piston rings in it for background info and lapped the valves and put all new seals in it

Congrats!

It'll never run right without the pipes but now you know that it will start.  The smoke is normal and should stop when you burn off the assembly lube and dust.

Yeah I wanted to make sure it starts before I buy other parts and do the last of the cosmetic stuff. When you say assembly lube do you mean the cases? Because I didnt crack the cases. I hope I wasnt supposed to put assembly lube on anything I put back in because I didnt  :(

I usually use assembly lube on the valves and rocker assemblies and then just use motor oil on the cylinder walls, rings, and wrist pins.  Either way, you cranked it for a while before it fired off so you probably had oil on everything.   You'll know something is wrong if it doesn't stop smoking.

If you want to be sure, mount up the exhaust and let it run for a while with a fan blowing cool air on it.

only if you have a hole in the block.

likely it's from a gasket or one of the head bolts that end in the plug recesses (I've got to fix that too)
also... you sure you put the new pucks in right? Please say you used new pucks...

i am really bummed, i need to buy a new torque wrench and redo all my studs. I am also thinking about buying new studs and checking into heavy duty ones.

you wont really need heavy duty studs, you made sure the top of the barrel and head mating surfaces were flat, theyll leak via the oil passage o ring just like the 500/550 otherwise, they make a funny popping noise running straight off the head dont they?your assembly oil will burn away once your running it properly.

Now that I have to take it all apart to get out the broken stud how can I make sure it is flat? I need to check all my other studs to make sure I didn't stretch others, I'm guessing I just measure the length of them.

use a long steel straight edge and feeler guage on the cleaned surfaces, you can gently draw file slight imperfections out,if you were too strong on your torque wrench that might be why you snapped a stud, heavy duty studs are mostly an improvement used when running pretty high compression, the stock ones are fine.
