newbie with1974 cb550k0
« on: March 18, 2012, 09:55:01 AM »
Hey guys just wanted to introduce myself, my name is Lou. i am 38 yrs young and am from Riverside, Ca. i chop bikes for a living but don't worry, that's not why i am here today! ha ha ha. i recently picked up an 1974 cb550k0 for practically free and i thought it would be nice to make it my daily rider for a while vs. letting it be chopping material. i don't know much about this model since i haven't really cut one yet but i have been reading up about it here and in a couple other spots on the web. i don't believe my bike has the right side covers which are blue and who knows about the tank. a customer dropped off a 1972 cb450 last night which is in pretty pristine condition. he went ahead and gave me all the body parts which i could use to refurbish the 550. today i will go out to the garage and see what fits ect. his tank has the original green but the wrong paint scheme for my bike. it is in such nice condition i will try to run it as is on mine till i am ready to paint the bike proper in the future. i saw that they sell the correct tank decal on ebay. any input as to making this thing period correct would be helpfull as i would like to just make it original as possible

I live in LB and found a 550 that someone tried to chop and never finished.  Maybe you can help me out with that?  Regardless, welcome.

Howdy!  Welcome!
If all you do is save it from that seat you'll have done enough! :)

Lou!! You made me go out and check my shed.  There's one in the shed exactly like that.

Welcome.

Great find, I will be real interested in how this salvage turns out.

OK. So you want to be period correct so you need the links to the Honda parts fiche.  I use this site because it's local and and has the organization for me:

http://www.hondaofcrofton.com/fiche_select.asp
Click Honda/MOTORCYCLES
Expand years, choose model and pick you graphic
http://www.hondaofcrofton.com/fiche_section_detail.asp?section=123067&category=MOTORCYCLES&make=HONDA&year=1974&fveh=2941
Copy your part number
In 1974 color, there was Sunrise Orange, Freedom Green, and BOSS MAROON
83700-323-020TD

With the part number copied, go to
http://www.babbittsonline.com/honda-parts
Select your manufacturer, skip model and paste your copied part number
click Quick Look up (on left)
click Select Model (on left)

HURRAY!! You have a reverse parts look up!  It seems the BOSS MAROON was was very rare and limited to 1974.

This use to be much easier, but Honda changed the data source and all the Myspace graduates took over.

Back at the fiche, picking another graphics, HANDLEBAR @ CABLE, the left switch is 35200-374-671
And at Babbits, you clear the window, page back, paste the part #, Quick look up,
Your turn signal switch is shared with the 1975 CB550 K1 and the 1973-75 CB 750K3, CB750K4 and CB750K5.

This is a rare switch, that has never, will never be reproduced, with 11 wires that allow the buzzer to be turned off by moving the button in between off and left or right.  It was the holy grail to me.

This is period correct.  And a forum member sold me the switch after two years search.  You are in the right place, enjoy.

It's a beautiful, historical statement.  It is extreme engineering that survives time and neglect.

Please don't cut that bike.

If they are your daily riders, you must live a special place.

i kinda live in a special place (Southern California). moontan thankyou for sharing that info. with me. i knew someone had to have something to help me out with this. to be honest it is alot easier to create a brand new bike vs. restoring it. i would also like to see the bike restored.
