Electrical Shutdown
« on: March 19, 2012, 09:24:24 AM »
Ok, So I was riding my motorcycle to work this morning and all was well until...... all my electrical power went out.  The light went and the engine followed.  I have no electrical power and I think that it might be a bad terminal connection for my battery.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Which bike?  What year?

Common places for total electrical failure is a blown main fuse, melted fuse (yes, there is a difference) and/or key switch issues.

Fuse:
Is if blown (fried in the middle) or melted (looks OK, but a replacement fuse fixes the problem temporarily)

Key switch:
Is the connector loose or corroded?  Does wiggling the key cause the bike to light up?
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Might be time to go through and clean your connections. Check chasis ground (battery negative to frame), connections at the battery, and all connectors. Sand paper works nicely to get any corrosion and oxidation of the connections. Deoxit Gold (spray can) is great for keeping oxidation from coming back.

I've had the exact same experience with my 750K5... discovered the wires in my ignition switch were corroded, even melted together.

Sorry Guys.  The bike is a 73 cb350F and I think I did blow a fuse, but the screws were so stripped out on the fuse box that I couldn't even get it off...... I bit the bullet and took it to the shop on this one.  I should know tomorrow what's up with it.
