Can't get moving
« on: March 23, 2012, 08:48:31 PM »
You may recall this '76 CB750A is my $100 pennysaver find.
New issue on ride today in wonderfull weather.
I have had an issue engaging drive. Most rides I make sure I have a downhill to get going (stalls when engage "L"). When at a stop or light, all was fine. The idle up is a bit laggy so thought this was the problem.
Today, start on my downhill launch, engage "L" and stall at about 10-15 MPH. No problem, just thumb the starter and away we go.
So great weather and ride, for a while. After a few stops, noticed she is trying to jump ahead. Bucking at the stop sign. Idle seemed steady and smooth.
Last time - stalled at the stop sign. Arrgh, lucky to be at top of hill. Roll around an point down. Get rolling good, start her up, engage "L" and stall, repeat and stall. Rev higher, stall.
Engine performace seems good, again the idle advance is laggy, but once going it engages.

Any ideas?

Check the idle up device and all its related plumbing for vacuum leaks.

I agree with Stu, sounds like a problem with the idle kicker. If I were you, I'd get the problem straightened out before you go for another ride. It can't be very enjoyable to ride a bike that requires that you always ride down hill to start out.

Thanks for tips. Will check the status of the selonoid.
Question, shouldn't the same effect be there if I just set an obnoxious Idle speed?
For example, it seems when the idle is kicked up it is around 2200 rpm. If just set there, will that work?

Also, I have seen some builds or the 750a without airbox, non-standard carbs, etc., how do they get around this issue/feature?
