What's the difference in theses bikes?
« on: March 19, 2012, 09:15:38 PM »
Just saw a picture of a "Scrambler", looks like a Cafe Racer with knobby tires. Can anyone explain the difference in bike types. Scramber? Street Fighter? Bobber? I know a Chopper and Cafe Racer.

Don't forget about "Brat" bikes!

I have always heard that a "streetfighter" is a sport bike with the fairings removed and a couple of inches of extra rise on the handlebars. I think "bobber" is a bit more difficult to define since it is can be an amalgam of various "bob jobs", including aesthetic and performance upgrades, but my impression is they are kind of between cafe bikes and choppers in terms of modifying to look unique versus making potentially legitimate performance upgrades.

Anyway, that's my two cents. I work in the bicycle industry and notice lots of funny trends, especially towards retro styles, like the "constructeur", "randonneur", and "porteur" styles that are popular with custom frame-builders lately, for instance.

Oh, and here you go: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scrambler_(motorcycle)

Just search wikipedia.org for those terms and you should find some informative articles.

If I recall, back in the day, a scrambler was a marketing term for dual purpose, street and light off road. Usually had knobbies and upswept pipes.
What I don't see a lot of difference is between brat and bobber. Usually the extra bits are cut or bobbed off, short wheelbase and solo seat.
Don't forget rat bike either. :->
They are all just words, as long as the two people involved in the conversation agree on the meaning it's all good.

Scrambler was what we call today MotoX, Street Scrambler is as you say a semi off-road style popular in the 60/70's, take a look at Honda CL series of bikes.
