550 jugs/cylinder head on a 500 bottom end?
« on: March 21, 2012, 04:51:03 PM »
Is this a terrifically stupid idea?
Or a terrific idea?
I know the clutch/gearbox is "better" on the 550, but I have a 500 sitting on my garage floor.  The cylinder fins are busted on one side from a P.O. crash, and I'd like a bit more pop... so I thought maybe an extra 50cc would do the trick?  I'd order new gudgeon pins/circlips and assuming the crankpins are in good shape... bolt the fugger up and smile.

Could it be that simple? (asked the simpleton).

 ;D

I recently restored and sold a 77 cb750f, and am nearly finished with a (former basket case) cb750k5.  This is a place to share, learn and enjoy.  I am grateful to and for 99+% of this site's membership.

The sleves are bigger on the 550 cylinders. You'll have to bore the cases to match.

ah. Thanks for the info Dave.

Perhaps I'll leave well enough alone and just get this old girl running.

The NEXT one I build will start life as a 550.
