CB550F carb Rebuild
« on: September 07, 2011, 11:34:46 PM »
 Hi everybody,

So far this site has helped me out immensely and hope it will continue to do so.  I was recently given some freebie carb gaskets and o rings and decided to clean them out.  is there an idiots guide with pictures to help out on disassembly and reassembly?  i checked out the faq but at this juncture most of it went over my head.

thanks , Dan

It should be pretty simple. Just don't do what you don't need to do. 1st off--have you ever rebuilt a carb before? If so, then it's probably very similar. So here's what you're gonna do:
1st- Rule. Do one carb at a time (especially for noobs)
2nd- rule. Get either compressed air in a can or an air compressor with a blow line.

Your carbs probably only need cleaned and maybe some new floats, needles and seats. (in that order)

**Now, I must note that this is all just my personal opinion which I have gained from my own personal tinkering**

Can you do me a favor and list how many miles your bike has, and what year the bike is and post a close-up picture of your carbs?

Cheers-
KC

i think its being impulsive,,getting some free gaskets has given you the urge to use them?sure they are the correct ones?

It will be my first rebuild. They were a freebie from a family owned business because I refer them a lot. They just wanted to show appreciation. The bike has 30k + miles. The third leaks sometimes. Since it's my first bike I always enjoy jumping in and learning more about it. I have some experience helping my buddy with his rd350 carbs. And I like my seat haha

Go for it! I just rebuilt my '74 550 carbs, replacing all the O- rings but reusing the OEM jets. Read everything on this board about carbs and carb rebuilding, and it should go well. Like you, this was my first carb rebuild, and the results were exellent. I used an ultrasonic cleaner with simplegreen to do the cleaning. Be sure you have compressed air to blow out the jets (the opening on the low speed jet in particular is amazingly small). Good luck.
