Well.........here it is in my dirty, cluttered garage. I went there with the money in my pocket and every intention of bringing it home and when I was looking at it again and asking him questions about it, he looked at me and said "why dont you take it home and get it running and if you still want it bring me the money and if your not happy with it just bring it back and I will give you the money you spend on it back"

I did figure out what all the grime was all over it. Its 20 years or so worth of cigarette and wood stove smoke crud.
I got it home and sprayed some cleaner on it and hit it with the hose and the brown started pouring off it.

Dang oh dang that is a very nice survivor. Worth every penny of the $1,000. You can easily get over $500 alone for the tank and side covers if the motor would happen to be toast (of which it is not). Honda is making the 4 into 4 exhaust again for these bikes if you really want to get it back to original. Cost of a set of 4 will be about $1,200. Congrats...you will get plenty of envious looks on that piece of history. Keep the pics coming.

It is worth that and more. Does the tank have fuel in it? If yes, dump it. Shine a light in there, any rust?

Plan on buying a new battery, you will need it.

A little tip for you since this is your first 750. Only check the oil when the motor is warm. These bikes will drain some oil back into the lower engine area when they sit. The new guy comes out...checks the oil...it shows low oil...he adds a quart or 2...takes off on the bike...oil blows out the breather all over the back tire and hopefully he does not dump it over. Just wanted to clue you in on this. So if you check your oil now it will probably show low, but just change it and the filter and add what the manual says and you will be fine. Be sure to get yourself an owners manual or service manual as it will help you out a lot and save you a lot of money doing it yourself. Good luck with it and keep us informed on your progress.

Thanks for the tip. The oil is showing a little low and I would have never known that info.

I appreciate all the compliments and help, and WELCOME any advice on this thing.
I am going to start on it tonight and try to have it up and running hopefully soon.

I doubt, you will have to spend anywhere near a grand working on it.. maybe over the next six years... and 40,000 miles..
nice bike.. grab it while you can...

Not to distract from a nice bike, a good deal, and an enthusiastic, good natured new owner:

tires and tubes - $300
Airfilter - $25
battery - $36.00
Chain and sprockets - $125
Title transfer and registration - $75
oil and filter - $28

That is $589 immediately, not including stuck cables, clutch replacement, cracked isolator rubbers, carb rebuild parts, or anything else the bike may need in the first few miles.  Prices above also assume only parts cost.  If he doesn't do all of his own work it will increase dramatically.  I have no idea why I waste my time justifying my comments to the ill informed. I have returned many of these bikes to the road and it averages around $1000.

Wow, pretty jealous here!

Get Hondaman's book... it's more than worth the price you'll pay.

With a bike that nice, you hafta get the original exhaust on there! Good score, and it would probably make the ol' boy pretty happy to see her running again.

One more tip for you. When you remove the oil filter bolt which is the canister looking thing on the lower front of the bike, use a 6 point socket. Previous owners had a tendency to crank that bolt down very tight. Then if you round off that bolt you end up with another deal to get it off. When you do get it off pay attention to what is inside there. You should have a spring and washer on the inside bolt shaft. The washer is usually stuck to the rubber of the old filter. The spring you can not miss.
Last tip...there should be a crush washer on the oil pan bolt and the oil tank bolt...both of which you drain during the oil change. Sometimes previous owners lose or do not put them back on. They are only 25 cents from the dealer so try to watch for them when you do that oil change. You want those in place.

Very nice find! Some steel wool 000 to the rims and you have a STEAL! What a great bike! If you can post videos of her running when she is all ready to go! How clean is the tank inside? Do the gauges look nice or sun faded? Either way that is a great bike and enjoy

WTF? Don't go near chrome with steel wool unless you want to unchrome them.

Steel wool does not hurt chrome,...Abrasive SCOURING pads do..
Rigid, I do not ASSume chain/sprockets need to be changed, I inspect them, if its low mileage they should not be worn out.. Not all bikes need that much, the 74 I am riding has nowhere near a grand into it, and I have ridden it 700 plus times.. the day I picked it up, I rode it to Bonneville next day.. , got a chain and tire on it   on the road in 09 for 120 bux. I guess you can spend more but not every bike needs it..

Agreed, I used 0000 with WD40 and have excellent results. Scouring pads are a bummer.

I wouldn't worry about the bike sitting that long in a good environment.  Mine sat for 25 years in a similar situation and required minimal work to get it into top running condition.  After 3 years of ownership it developed it's first oil leak and a very minor one at that (tack cable seal). The only other issues I have had in that time were a blown fuse and failed starter button.   With 10K miles on mine I am still running the OEM sprockets and chain.  You will need to rebuild the front brake caliper and MC and likely replace brake lines (they tend to plug when sitting long term).  Gas tank and carbs are the big variable.   Before you start spinning the engine over do an oil change and save a quart and squirt it into the tappet access ports with a squeeze bottle to get something into that dry top end.  Put a little lube into the cylinders and leave the plugs out and just kick it over with the kicker a dozen or two times.
Looks like you scored a nice find for a good price.

Those headers are a funky colour. Is that normal for those pipes?

Keep in mind if you run it for any length of time it is a good idea to put a fan on the front of the motor. I would hate to see that baby overheat. Congrats...she sounds very good!!! I think the idle will come down once you get the air box in place. Should be around 1,200 RPM +/- or so.

Headpipe chrome usually turns gold/blue when exhaust is too hot. A lean fuel condition is one cause.
