could use a opinion or two
« on: March 23, 2012, 01:50:20 PM »
So im rebuilding my top end, I'm at the honing my cylinders part for my new rings. So i hear its pretty easy to just use a ball hone to get the glaze off and get a nice crosshatch but a local motorcycle shop will do it for 15 dollars a cylinder, so what I'm asking is should i do it myself or pay the pretty cheap price for a professional to do it?

Do you want to ride or learn how the hone cylinders without training?

I don't think it's that difficult, but you do need to get a feel for it regarding the speed of the drill and rhythm of motion to produce the nice 45 degree crosshatch angle.  $15 per hole and you don't have to worry about that.  Personally, I would probably try it myself.

I'm sure I did it years ago by hand. It doesn't need to be crosshatched, just scuffed to break the glaze. Some fine wet&dry.

Before you hone the cylinder walls you need to measure the cylinders top and bottom if you have not done so.
The dingleberry or ball hone only takes a couple passes on each cylinder to get them ready for new rings.  Up an down maybe 10 times each.

You do not need to hone them much. Just a up and down movement in the cylinder as the hone is spinning. Make sure the hone is all the way in the cylinder so the top of the cylinder wall edge does not get all rounded off.

Sorry I can't help but laugh.

Dingleberry Noun:

vulgar. A particle of fecal matter attached to the anal hair.
