Recognize this ignition?
« on: March 22, 2012, 05:51:35 PM »
Picked this up from ebay for cheap. Like, $9 cheap. I figure the advance mechanism is worth that.
It has "TEC" and "Japan" on the pickups. No other markings....well, some numbers on the plate but I think they're Honda numbers.
What can you tell me about it?

it's honda.. and it can be from anything... nighthawk, or DOHC 750.. $9 is a good price, but it's useless without the CDI ignition modules, or signal amplifiers. http://www.ebay.com/itm/81-Honda-CB750F-CB750-CDI-ignition-spark-module-/190607573748?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2c6118c2f4&vxp=mtr#ht_1975wt_984
you will need two of them, and it's very likely that will bring you to about the same price as a brand new dyna.
Which of your bikes do you picture using  it on?

Well, from the ad: "up for auction is a ignition unit with the advance unit off a 1976 cb550 ".

I was hoping to use it on my upcoming "sweep the floor" bike, '71 CB500 engine.

the 76 cb 550 still had points.
I recognize that pickup, and like I said, it was on a lot of bikes from around 81 up, but again, you're gonna spend another $100 on the ignitors...  you'll also need to slot them so you can adjust the timing. It's likely that the springs on the advance mechanism are probably close to what you need..
or, for about the same dough, you could just do this>

.well, some numbers on the plate but I think they're Honda numbers.
What can you tell me about it?
...maybe more if we knew what those numbers were..

On the back of the plate, in ink: 341020  That "3" might be a "5", so 541020?

Well, shoot.....I thought I had scored on a cheap points replacement. :(

You may have.  I have the CDI igniters you need, I'll send them to you for $25.00 which covers postage and my beer for about 3 hours.  I'm not sure how to test them but if anyone can tell me how to test them I'd be happy to test them before I ship them.  PM me if you want them.

Definately looks like a cb650 pick up, surely it would be possible to adapt it to a 550 but you will need the igniters to go with it.

What would I do with the ignitors? How, exactly, would I wire them up with a CB550 harness (which I have two of)?

they plug directly into the 6 pin connectors, and you'd give the black wire switched power, then take the yellow and blue wires to their respective coils.

Into what 6 pin connector? Would the 550 harness have the right plug?

If you put all this together, keep an eye on the battery voltage and charging situation. The 550 does not have a lot of alternator like the 650 does, and you might find that you will run out of power, like when running the Dyna S ignitions. Use of stock points and coils (or Dyna's 5-ohm coils) will improve on things...

Eh, sounds like it's not worth the trouble. The ebay seller has agreed to a return/refund, unless somebody here wants to get those ignitors from Thrutheframe and give it a shot.
