Gerex 2 ignition
« on: March 24, 2012, 12:20:34 AM »
I was going through the bat cave today and came across some very cool stuff, some old RC catalogs and a very comprehensive Yoshimura catalog with full tuning instructions for the CR31's {tickler type}, it also contained a Moriwaki catalog and some action 4's stuff, i also found the fitting sheet for the RC 315 cam thats in my drag engine. At the bottom of the box was a Gerex ignition box with instructions, can anyone tell me anything about the Gerex..?

G'Day Mick, I replied to your PM but I thought I'd kick your thread along too, I've got a Gerex ignition in my garage for a GS1000 Suzuki, it came off an RC GS1000, Russ had come a long way since the CB750 Cobra engines and was using some good US made aftermarket stuff by 1980.

The "Multi-Spark" or "Multi-Fire" ignitions were very expensive compared to Dyna's and Marteks, and that's what killed them, but I believe that they worked well, mine came from a running bike that the original owner was restoring, but the ignition had lasted 20 years when I bought it, so I'm sure that yours will be a goer too.

The only thing I'd say against them is that there are a lot of parts and brackets etc, and they probably don't work any better than the Dyna's or Marteks of the same era. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

That's the ignition I have, Mick. Works great!!! (I don't think it can be compared to Dyna or Martek, as it is a CDI)

I have a NOS Gerex in my basement but don't know a thing about it.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

I've got one sitting in a box that I was too frightened to install on my GS1000 Scott as it runs puuuurfectly with the NOS Martek 440 and new 3 Ohm Dyna coils, but you know more about them than me, what is the Gerex's biggest advantage over Dynas and Marteks? Cheers, Terry. ;D

Hey Retro,

Any chance you could scan the CR31 set-up manual and let me have copy? I would really appreciate it if possible!

Thanks.

Hi Scott, i have the control box but can't seem to find the ignition plate, is there any other plate that will work, Dyna maybe.?  Do i need the Gerex coils.?

I'll pull mine out of the box and take a pic and post it if you like Mick? I don't think the plates are interchangeable with anything else. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Thanks for linking that thread, Terry. Mick, prior to installing those KV coils, I used the stock coils. Do you have the pick-ups and the rotor? The plate itself would not be too hard to fabricate.

Here's the pics of mine Mick, I don't know if it's a "1" or a "2", but I'm guessing it's a "1". Cheers, Terry. ;D

That looks like a 2, Terry, since the wires exit the end of the box, instead of the back. Maybe it's a down under thing, but mine has the wires on the other end of the box. PLEASE check the resistance of the Gerex coils!!!

Maybe they put the sticker on upside down Scott?

I think they're marked 1.2 Ohms mate, is that what you need? Cheers, Terry. ;D

I have some more boxes of stuff thats packed away Scott, i'm in the middle of a move, so when i get sorted i will have a look.

Terry, my CDI box is red and has GerexII on the side of it, it is about the same size as your box though.

No worries Mick, the big bracket is so you can mount the box on the outside of the bike, I think mine was mounted on a frame rail under the seat. Cheers, Terry. ;D

If i can use it i will make room between the battery and the oil tank, i am going to use a smaller battery so i'll modify the battery box and stick it there....{if i use it}  ;)

I just did an eBay search Mick, but got no hits. I think you'd need to mount the box out in the airstream mate, I've got a feeling it'd need to be kept as cool as possible. Cheers, Terry. ;D

From the instructions: " If a fairing is installed, be damned sure that a free blast of air passes over the C-D unit..." Gerry had a sense of humor. ;)
