77 cb550F SS stock 4-1 muffler info
« on: March 22, 2012, 08:00:11 AM »
Ok I've been searching but haven't found what I'm looking for. Which happens to be some answers about the original mufflers. To all the experts, is it possible to rebuild a stock muffler? Is there a cut away picture of the stock 4-1 muffler that came on the the 77 550f ss? At first glance mine appears to be in decent shape, but upon closer inspection it's got some holes along the bottom, and the end was knocked out by a PO along with a baffle or two. I love the look of stock and would like to see if I can replicate it with replacement baffles and a custom end or if there's really and point in wasting the time. The only replacement that seems to be readily available is a mac megaphone slip on. Also, is there a trick to getting the original muffler band bolt out? sockets don't seem to fit and turn, might be bent or the age of it has me beat! number 13 and number 11 in the diagram, as soon as I get that off I can see exactly what's going on with it.

I know the muffler topics have been covered pretty extensively. I think I've read them all.

thanks in advance!

Rick

You could try heating it up a bit on the top side...it's probably somewhat rusted together like mine was. I have a stock muffler that I don't want and I'd love to see it go to good use (probably would nearly give it to you!) Also..looks like you're in Bloomington...you should come out to bike night sometime at my buddy's shop. PM me and I'll give you more info, but it's Thursday nights usually around 7pm. Things like that bolt are addressed and handled much better with a full shop and a more than one head  8)

Cheers,
KC

I'll try the heat! been soaking it in Liquid Wrench for a while now. it's gonna come off one way or another... Bike night sounds cool! What shop is it? I usually have my daughter on Thursday evenings but occasionally I might be able to break free! Sounds like fun. My bike is the typical slow budget build at the moment but this weather has me itching to kick it up a notch for sure! Let me know about the stock muffler...

Thanks!

Rick

Get that sucka off! We meet up at a few different locations...I'll message you my phone number and whenever you get a free Thursday give me a call or text and I'll get you the directions to whichever shop we're at. The "normal" shop we go to is out by REV-Sport. It's really fun working with these old machines and we always enjoy seeing sohc4's slowly get better! I'm currently looking for the muffler...thought it was in my closet, but couldn't find it amongst the piles of parts and clothes! Hopefully it's in my garage...I'll have a look this evening and see if I can dig it up. This weather has been great! Hope it doesn't rain all weekend, but it's a small price to pay for what we've had lately!

Cheers!
Kyle

Bikecrazy, If the OP is not interested, I would be. Need a better looking muffler for my stock 75 550F.

In case anyone is in the same situation, it turns out that nut is welded on the muffler clamping band, and there is really no head on the bolt. I resorted to cutting it off with a dremel tool, and it came right out. Unfortunately the original muffler is indeed shot with some large holes and rusted out baffles. So, the search is on, stock 550F 4-1 muffler.
