Move cam chain one link on cam gear?
« on: March 23, 2012, 07:38:23 PM »
Finished rebuilding my 750K6 engine. Got EVERYTHING hooked back up, walked down to the corner gas station and bought a gallon of gas and a 6 pack. Ho boy, I hope it works. 8)
Then realized I'd forgotten to set the points and timing, set points. I'm setting timing with a volt meter.
Can't set timing!  ???     WTF ???
Rotating engine around to T F 1-4 mark it wont line up. Play around with it some more and discover if I rotate the points plate ALL the way clockwise. It will fire when the 1-4 double hash marks(advance marks ||) line up.
Something like this
|   |        ||
T  F    1 4
               ^
Fires here^

So I think I've got the cam chain advanced on the gear by one or two teeth.
Does this sound right ?
Thanks
Steve

Ignition timing on our bikes is NOT related to cam timing. ;)

I think maybe you should look at your point gap again.

Like they said ^^.
Also, look at the brand name on your points and baseplate. If it is new Daiichi points, you might save a lot of time by getting good ones instead, from a Honda dealer. Many of the Daiichi points cannot be timed, because they are incorrectly made, most notably: the ones marked "CHINA". There are some of these marked "JAPAN", and they seem to work better.

Cam gear is not related ( as already said by Scottly) to ignition timing...If your points will only open at the || full advance marks, then maybe your advance mechanism is stuck 'open'... ;)

Pull those crappy points out and install a Dyna S ignition mate, time it once, and forget about it for the life of your bike. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Fresh this morning and reading responses. Able to think thru and understand how timing works.

I'll go back and check points again. I'd set them at .013.
The advancer is clean and lubed. The points plate is a TEC brand. Don't know what brand the points are. They only have about 600 on them and 500 of that is with Hondamans ignition. I did have a heck of a time getting them to work with Marks ignition. They had a cosmoline coating.
Thanks

In addition to rotating, that point plate can also move up and down and side to side  very slightly.  It makes timing a real adventure to set.  See if you can jostle the whole plate slightly up and down or to the sides.

Yes. And if need be, I would sacrifice a perfect gap to a proper timing. Get it running and get different points later.

Remember point gap is 12thou to 16 thou, so set it where it works. Go further if necessary to keep the plate slots in range.

She Lives :)
After a long day yesterday and trying to finish and fire her up before it got dark, I got stupid!
Went back at it this morning and points were off. Also discovered my voltmeter's batteries were dying. Fixed that and timing was a breeze.
She fired up and sounds good.
Keep my fingers crossed for a good break-in!
Thanks to everybody this forum.
