Duh what a bunny!
« on: March 23, 2012, 09:32:41 PM »
Was out with my lady on the back for a ride today, some goober did a uturn in front of us and for same unknown reason (I can only guess at brain fart) I hit the starter button instead of the horn!! :-[
Bike stalled and we coasted to the side of the road where I expected either a blown fuse or a horrible rattle from the starter motor but no it fired right up!
Not sure if this bike (Suzuki Boulevard) has some sort of over-ride to protect against idiots like me but it certainly does not seemed to have caused any issues.  ;)
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

1.... So glad Hush is still hanging-out here, even without an SOHC Honda .
2.......Still comes here to ask a Q about his Suzuki, right on !!

Anyway, your starter has a 'clutch' that allows it to spin away with no effect once the motor has started and is idling or revving... i.e. the starter motor will only crank the engine waay below the crank speed when the motor is actually running ( even at idle )......
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,

You were lucky Hushy, the starter motor on my Suzuki GS1000S "imploded" during a speed run (140 MPH+) when I inadvertantly thumbed the starter button when I was trying to get as low down on the tank as possible.

I didn't know at the time of course, so after having some illegal fun I pulled into a gas station and filled it up, then when I went to start it, it was like the battery was dead? Ooh, Ok, so I push started it and rode it home at saner speeds.

Next morning I tried to start it with a fully charged car battery, but it made no difference, so I pulled the starter motor, and it was a mess, it was seized, and shards of starter motor innards fell out when I removed the end caps.

I took it to my local wreckers yard and Jeff, the proprieter sold me a good used one, and told me that he'd seen it before, and to go home and check my starter clutch as well. I did, and it looked like it'd exploded, the three "slugs" had burst thru the sheetmetal cover and the whole thing was buggared.

Several hundred dollars later it was all good, but it taught me a lesson about putting my digits where they weren't wanted. I guess Suzuki has improved it's starters since 1981, which is a good thing............. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

yours might have stalled hush because the stand was up and in gear and clutch released, when you hit the starter the ecu recognised this and stopped ignition and fuel pump maybe?modern bikes wont start or crank in this situation?

Hush, you should be able to check out these theories easily...just get some buddy to pull a u-turn in front of you again and deliberately hit the starter switch to see what happens. :P

I remember a pic on here of bulged starter roller cage on a sohc 4, and we were all wondering what happened.... never happened to me..

I am getting a 72 right hand switch right now...I use them with horn in place of starter, then eliminate left side switch...

Yup I'm a bunny, but had horror memories of throwing the starter into the motor of my Dad's 1965 HD Holden cos those 6's were so damn quiet, that noise still makes me shudder.
Guess Spanner is right and the makers have improved starter/engine connections since my youth.
Oh yeah and get used to me dropping in for advice, this would have to be one of the sanest and has the best reply rates of any motorcycle forum on the net! ;D
I've tried to hook up to Suzuki/Cruiser/Boulevard forums but they have unuseable sites and unfriendly members. :)
Still have my eye out for that barn-find CB750 I would love to rebuild. ;)
Oh and check out this picture I lifted from believe it or not a Harley site, are my eyes decieving me or is that a CB650Z under that young couple?

It kinda reminds me of that scene from "European Vacation" :

Rusty Griswold: [watching the romantic couple make out at the table] Dad he's grabbing her tits right there at the table!
Clark Griswold: Just eat your breakfast, Russ.
Rusty Griswold: [Rusty still watching the couple] ... Dad, I think he's gonna pork her.
Clark Griswold: He's not gonna pork her, Russ.
Rusty Griswold: I think he's gonna.
Clark Griswold: He may pork her, finish your breakfast. ;D
