Flip-top fuel cap assembly
« on: March 25, 2012, 01:38:05 PM »
Hi there --

I actually have a twin, not a four, but the people on hondatwins don't seem to know the answer to this and this forum is much, much more active ;)

I'm looking for an exploded view of the inner seals for the flip-top fuel cap on a CL(CB)350. I took mine apart some time ago to clean and refinish the tank, but I neglected to write down the order the parts came out, so now I just have a bunch of plates and seals with no idea of how to put them together again.  Does anyone have such a diagram? The parts fiche just shows the whole unit, labeled "packing".

Alternately: this has got to be a fairly standard part that Honda used on a lot of its bikes, so someone must know offhand how they go back together. Here's a picture of the nine pieces...can anyone help me out?

Thanks very much!  :)

You are missing the part that the screw goes into in the photo.
This is a vented fuel cap.

Part#9 goes with part#8.
Part#7 goes onto the top of part#5.
(you can see the rust) where the spring sat on the washer. That is a clue.
Part#5 goes on top of part#6
Part #8(screw) with rubber O ring goes on top of part#1.
Part#7(spring) goes under part#1 to keep the spring centered.
Part#4 (rubber) goes on top of part#1
Part#5 and 6 goes on top of part#2 with the spring sitting on top of #5.
Part#3 sits on top of #2 so that the #4 rubber washer has a place to sit.
Part #3 also has the spring going through the center of the washer.

It is easy once you carefully look at the MARKS left on each part by the part it was connected with. Thank god you did not paint it!

I will post a drawing....hold on.

Something like this.

Right -- the cap itself has the threaded hole for the screw, and I figured that the screw goes into that and holds the whole thing together.

I thought about trying to assemble it from the marks, but I didn't want to mess up and either block the vent or cause a leak, so I figured I would ask some group that knows first. Thank you! The diagram would be really helpful too :)

Thanks for the tips -- I started to put it together the way you suggested, but the spring wouldn't compress enough to make it fit that way, so I don't think that is quite how it works. However I followed your advice and tried to align the marks left by one part on another, and I think I figured something out. This doesn't seem to be quite the right arrangement either, though -- now the screw doesn't stick through far enough to attach to the fuel cap.

Still trying, though. I'm surprised there's no diagram anywhere of how this works! I found one archived post here that looks like it would have been helpful, but the relevant image was missing...

[edit] nope, that arrangement doesn't fit either. Hrm.

Three -- the two gaskets and the little o-ring, numbers 4, 6 and 9. The only one on mine that's showing any sign of cracking or damage is the largest one, though.

So you have a similar gas cap, eh...any chance you could go and unscrew it and tell me how it's put together? :P

Of course after I post about it, I manage to pick the right combination of search strings to find exactly the diagram I need. Ta da!

Thanks for the help anyway though!
