My first Honda project 1978 CB750k
« on: March 27, 2012, 04:34:59 am »
I have built quite a few bikes but the cafe bug has bitten me. I got this 78 750k for what I thought was a fair price. I have stripped it down The bike to the bare frame. Sandblasted, cut, grinded and cleaned. I just finished painting the frame and swing arm and now its time to rebuild. Carbs were rebuilt. Replaced all the bearings on the bike. New cables brake pads  etc... The is coming along. I'm just waiting for new wheels to arrive. I will post some pictures of the build as I progress.

Are you using some kind of a frame kit where those lower tubes are cut off ?

The frame was cut when I got the bike. I have a kit from Cycle X that will go in  the frame to reconnect the tubes.

If that chain that is in the photo is the old #630 chain I would get rid of it.

Looks good so far. Thanks for the photos!

What was wrong with 630 then? Not arguing, I've read a lot of posts about it and I'm curious about what the problem is.

theres nothing wrong with the 630 chain, lucky just has a stick up where the sun dont shine about them. sure they are more expensive and there are less sprocket choices but good luck breaking one.

My project has been moving slowly. Looking for a rear wheel for a 77/78. I just finished painting my tank and tail. Now maybe I will get more motovated to finish her up. Let me know what you think of my paint choice. Thanks

Sandblasted all the rusty parts. Primed and painted the parts to keep the cost down. Still need a rear wheel  for a 77/78 anyone out there let me know.

Nice color scheme! Are they the same as the '79 650?

What was wrong with 630 then? Not arguing, I've read a lot of posts about it and I'm curious about what the problem is.

The #630 chain manufactured 33 years ago is very weak and they did break all the time. It is a massively heavy chain also.
The more modern chains like the #530 chain is used on 121 Hp bikes with no problems Like the Honda VF1000R. Just better manufacturing and testing.

Many engine cases on Honda CB750's were damaged when chains broke by the #630's massive weight. The 77-78 CB750k's had a thicker engine case in that area but it still got broken.

The 1979's had a special metal plate bolted near the front sprocket to help prevent engine case damage from those massive #630 chains.

By switching to the #530 regular chain it will save a lot of weight, and is very unlikely to break like the old #630 chains did.

If you do not believe me, ask Cycle-x how many broken engine cases they see from this chain damage.

Think about this. If a chain broke and you were standing in its path, which one would hurt you the most....The heavy chain or a light weight chain?

Funny that you mention the cracked case. I picked up a 78 cb750k a couple weeks ago and it's cracked there, too. Now I know why. Too bad I just ordered a new 630 chain and sprockets, though.

Nice looking bike - good job!

The only thing that sticks out to me is the fork gators look too "squished" together.  Are those OEM?

:) The carbs worked great. I had to play with the jets because of the pipe.  You did a great job! They looked brand new inside and out. Any needing a carb rebuild should talk to harisuluv
