1978 cb750k Gas lid lock replacement?
« on: March 27, 2012, 08:55:41 AM »
Does anybody know if they make, and if they do, where I can get, a replacement for the lock on the lid of the gas tank on my 1978 cb750k? i just bought a new tank and the lock was removed. Anybody have any ideas about a substitute?
What am I doing and why am I doing it? Those are excellent questions.

The newer locking latch is still available from Honda or eBay.

Most of us prefer to retrofit the older latch, which is not available from Honda. This place makes the best replica IMO.

PS: OOps you may be talking about the locking lid? In which case, never mind.

Here's one on fleabay if you not opposed to it:)

http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Fuel-Cap-Gas-Petrol-Latch-Lock-CB450-CB500-CB750-K-OEM-Honda-A-a87-/230766305247?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item35babe5fdf&vxp=mtr

You said this was a 78, right?  If so that one won't work - the 77 and 78's used a locking door that covered a gas cap.  That's also why MCR caught himself!

Unfortunately thelowmax, never have seen any aftermarket replacements for the locking gas cap doors on the later or F models...But you might try talking to a locksmith and see they can do anything with the old one.

To be honest the lock is not a whole lot of security.  Anybody that's really that hard up or determined can easily get to the fuel line and then turn the fuel tap on.

First off, the lock isn't really a lock.  Its just a bit of plastic that looks like a lock and can be opened with anything flat enough to fit in it,  so no lock smith is required.

Second, I had one break on me and was unable to find any new ones as well.  I had to scrounge eBay/here to find a used one.  They are very easy to take off and put on.  If you open the tank door, there should be a little metal tab thingy on the back you pull out.  Once that's out, everything else falls out.

Do you have an old tank that you are not using you could steal from?  I looked for rusty/dented/beat up tanks that still had the lock/door still on them.  Good news is that our 78 tanks aren't as "sexy" as the earlier tanks so there are usually some deals to be had.

Best of luck.

Thanks guys. The problem isn't getting the lock out. The problem is getting a lock without having to buy a whole tank to get it off of. ;D

I have a spare K8 tank that's dented.  You can have the lock off that  :)

Not available from Honda guys.

Come to think of it I need one for my restore also! Anyone have another? Looks like the 550's and late 750's with the fuel tank lid will interchange. Please PM me if so. Thanks.

As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

In the absence of replacement parts, old or used stock, or better suggestions, I offer the following:  Push button hood latch.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0160TOFDC?ref=ppx_pt2_mob_b_prod_image&th=1&psc=1
The 25mm flange covers the lock area well, a thin o-ring will take up any play. Some creativity is required to mount the ball stud. I threaded a hole in a piece of steel shaped to fit the space occupied by the OEM spring, cut the stud to the proper length and put a thin rubber bushing between the stud and tank to prevent flex and wear.

Love the cup!  Very clean, I wish this had popped up in my search. I may have to attempt a redo...

A picture is worth... something. My solution is a little more ghetto than maxheadflow’s
But his sticks up too high IMHO and deforms the mating feature on the lid as pointed out by madman motors. I spent the most time getting the keyed aluminum piece to fit, then used the threaded steel piece to capture the alum between it and the nut while adding strength. The grommet is rattle prevention and keeps the alum from bending when the lid is closed. In hindsight I would attempt to create the keyed piece in aluminum. See attached sketch.

Edit: I would replace the keyed part in STEEL.  DUH.

I'm thinking a pair of these would be great for holding a pair of Pelican cases onto some custom mounts.

Probably not water tight though, but that's easily solved.

Nice solution! I have found some black one on Amazon!

Here is the one I did.

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php/topic,179786.msg2084943/topicseen.html#msg2084943

I am reaching out to Xometry that is a company that seems to have a network of small engineering shops to see if i can get the one that maxheadflow made for his fuel tank and kindly supplied the drawing. i sent them the drawing yesterday and waiting to see if they will quote me, it may be too small a job, dont know. if anyone is interested in getting one as well let me know as if they quote I could obviously order any quantity needed.
Thanks
Andy Marsden.
