Carpy's $300 pipes
« on: March 27, 2012, 12:33:07 PM »
So I just recieved my 4-1's from carpy. Now I know why they are relatively inexpensive, rough, raw, needs a bit of finishing compared to the $400 ones I got last time.have not tried to install them yet,we'll see.I got studs for this instead of the bolts.I sold the last set because I could not get them to seal for the life of me.I am going to do a bit of polishing and smoothing ,then I will powdercoat em.

What ever happened to "Once bitten"?

I hope you have better luck this time. I hope you are going to try them before you do any work on them.

Sorry to hear that!  I just received mine today.  They look pretty darn good for $300 pipes.  The welds look pretty good and mine came Black powder coated??  To be honest, I wasn't expecting for them to be PC so it was a bonus when I opened the box :)

Those do look a little rough!  I didn't think I was paying extra for the coating??  I paid $300 for them although shipping and handling was $65! Who knows.  Good luck with getting them straightened out.

Tig and Mig are two different types of welding, they both have their own strengths and weaknesses... though mostly Mig is faster and easier whereas Tig gives a better (stronger and tighter) weld in the hands of someone who knows how.

Yeah I dont have a lot of experience in tig, but I have friends who tig very well and its just extremely tidy and slag-less when done by a skilled welder.

Lossa engineering has a Yoshi 4-1 replica in stainless steel to CB750 and CB550. No issues with coating. If it touch the ground just grind and polish it!

If I had money to spend I should order one now. Just $450 in stainless steel.

Yep, for 300 bucks they look great, do they have baffles? I wouldn't be fussed about whether they're Mig or Tig welded though, Mig is fine, and was "state of the art" before Tig became the flavour of the month. Ducati used mig welding on all of it's steel "Trellis" frames, and I've never heard of one breaking. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Its been years since I had 4-1's on the bike, big difference.very good price if you ask me,cheaper than a mac.so now I have my 341's and 4-2 header to choose from when I build my project, next step, alloy wheels.

To Tig weld the fit has to be spot on...no gaps at all and this takes talent and time. When you use mig...you can "jump the gaps' on  poorly fitted pieces of the assembly.

300 bucks is good price... if you want highest quality...then get out the pocket book. Pipes for modern sport bikes and even Pro Singles flatrackers are 800 bucks and up.
220...221, whatever it takes.

This isn't news...I have one on my bike for almost a year.
It fit like garbage, no answers from Lossa...although they were somewhat happy to chat before they had my money, not so much
after.

Carpy was worse...I got the same run around as the earlier poster. I waited 3 months for him to tell me he knew nothing about my order. I had to go to paypal to get the transaction number and prove it to him. I cancelled my order with Carpy and bought the Lossa.

That was basically out of the frying pan and into the fire...

If you don't mind using a hockey stick to bend pipes into a usable position and get them sealed...then the Lossa exhaust is for you!

I called C to ask about these pipes and when he answered the phone he said: " I know who you are and what you're up to", and then hung up. I'm a bit confused but it's probably just as well. Not sure what happened really. Anyway the pipes look a bit rough, tig, mig or whatever. I worry they won't look much better chromed because of the welds. Also, what kind of jetting changes were required?

I agree...300.00 is cheap. That being said I would expect it to be  a reasonable fit.
