1978 Honda CB400.....is there such a thing?
« on: March 15, 2013, 01:54:38 PM »
heh guyz.....found what i think is a hell of a buy on a 1978 CB400, but when i go into the CB400 part of the forum, it says they were only made up until 1977?  Were there are 78's made, or is the seller pulling a fast one?

Below is a photo of the bike in case that helps determine what it actually is;

That's the CB400T, the 400 twin, not the CB400 four.

good enough!  talked to him on the phone today and other than some minor electrical issues (which i'm not overly concerned about), it should be good to go as he rode it all last summer.  he only wants $1000 for it, which seems like a heck of a deal.

On my way to check it out in a couple of hours, so will report back (hopefully with it loaded in my trailer!!).

400T should have a front disc and cam/balancers chains + adjusters can go badly(expensively) wrong

If the minor electrical problems are charging related, that can also get real expensive.  They are good bikes though...Larry

Welcome.  If memory serves me correctly, the 78 400T was called a Honda Hawk and there were at least 2 models, including an automatic and standard 5 speed, both very good rides.
Good luck with it.  Stickman

Stickman you are correct, in 78 theres the 400T1 which is spoked wheels and drum brakes. The 400T2 has comstars and a front disc brake and the Hondamatic, for some reason I think theres a hawk with spoke wheels and front disc but that might be a different wheel. My wife has a Cb400T2, great city comuter/rider but a little under powered on the highway. Tops out at around 115kms, great little bike though. Pretty bullet proof.

Hey Barry - Did you end up picking up the Hawk? Sure looks like a nice scoot to me! I, okay, my wife, has a '78 Hawk T2 (That one is a T1). We LOVE it. Great little bike. We can ride two up at 70 on the highway on that little 400. One of the best starting Honda's I have ever owned.

A CM 400 was my first rad bike (an '81 Custom). Basically the engine was the same. The different was the frame.
