I feel sorry for this guy....
« on: June 07, 2006, 02:00:32 AM »
All that horsepower and nowhere to play with it...I like the bit where the other motorcyclist on the light twin gets in front of him......no need to play the whole thing, it's 90 percent all the same apart from the end where he gets free of the traffic...inscrutable     ;D

I am so glad I live in the country. I was waiting for the guy to come a croper for sure. I know filtering (lane splitting?) is legal in the UK and some other places but I can see why that sort of riding gets it banned in others.

Has anyone seen the Prince Noir video, similar type of thing but from France & done at MUCH higher speeds. Well worth looking up on P2P, or try www.need4speed.ws. Unsurprisingly, the star's career ended early while making a follow up, so it's a kinda interesting testament to stupidity.

Did anyone recognise where it was filmed - I thought it was maybe Oz being as it was on the left. At first I thought UK but some of the vehicles looked very non UK, buses etc. would be intresting to find out. Maybe it was Terry late for work?

That was Japan, it was in the video title plus the japanese script on the trucks...

Many years ago I was in town on my bike and I struck up a conversation with a young lady while grabbing a bite to eat.  She was looking for a ride home since her roommate had forgotten to come pick her up.  Well, being a gentleman, I agreed.  About halfway to her place, while sitting at the end of a line at a light, I suddenly heard loud squealing brakes behind us.  Knowing we were about to about to become the filling in a sandwich, I goosed it and split the lanes between the waiting cars ahead of me and the now moving oncoming cars.  I swear I felt my elbows touch a couple times before we got through and into a clear lane...  Poor girl was shaking so hard she couldn't get off the bike without help.  Needless to say, I not only didn't make any points with her, but probably scared off bikes for life.

A shame, for saving her from being mashed, I thought I should have at least gotten her number...  Oh, yeah, the squealing brakes... they did a pretty number on the car we'd been sitting behind.  Glad we weren't still sitting there.

I'll bet that made a few of them think seriously about getting a bike!

I was just waiting for some arse to open his door...

I think the only state here in the us that lanesplitting is legal is california, but i think its also because they have a lot of motorcycle cops too; correct me if i'm wrong.. However, my dad does it here in new jersey all the time commuting from and to work. I mean after all, whats a cop in traffic gonna do? pull him over?

heh

cheers; will

Me too. I don't know if I should call him a "better" driver or just a "dumber" driver... I do it when traffic is standing still, but not if it's moving at all. If so, I'm on the shoulder where I have a LOT more room. I would've been the two bikes that he passed lol.

To keep talking about doors; Whenever my dad (or myself) does it, we always go pretty slow, so that noone notices us coming up. We just sort of putt through traffic. The shoulders here in nj are usually pretty big so theres a better chance of getting pulled over.

I thought it was pretty good riding. wasnt overly fast(90Km is about 50~55mph) just like the good old days around north circular and M25.
It wouldnt be possible to do that type of riding in Florida, not only are the cops anal but the driving standard is poor, a bunch of people resent anyone even trying to pass them and would deliberatly move into your path (it happens all the time on I-4 >:()
Its one time a quiet bike is a really good thing though, majority dont use mirrors so if they dont hear you coming they see you going ;D

Those of us that are Americans tend to look at all the horrible things car drivers do because that's where we are.  In other parts of the world, there is an understading and respect for all forms of traffic whether they be motorcycle, bicycle, or pedestrian.  Much like that video of an uncontrolled-by-signals intersection in Saigon (?) where all those vehicles, mostly small motorcycles, scooters and bicycles, in addition to some pedestrians, and four-wheeled vehicles, are traveling every which way in close quarters and no one got whapped, at least in the few minutes of that video.

For as great as this country (U.S.) is, people do some pretty effed-up things in the name of 'me-first.'

I was riding into Vancouver a few years ago with the wife on the back and we got stuck in traffic on one of the side roads leading into the city. I sort of forgot myself for a few seconds (flash back to when I used to filter in the UK) and decided to ride to the front of the line up which was waiting for some construction, thinking that it would help the overall flow of traffic. Anyhoo as I got to the front of the line up there was a big truck waiting, and as soon as it's driver saw that there was a possibility that this motorcycle bum (aka me) was going to get by him he pulled out in front of me halfway over into the opposit lane!

A sphincter factor of about 9.9, plus a pummelling from the wife behind....
