MAC slip-on muffler for750f
« on: March 29, 2012, 10:47:55 AM »
Does anyone have experience with the MAC slip on megaphone for the 75-76 750f?  It looks like an inexpensive way to change the look and sound of the bike.  I'd like to see a pic of it on a bike and would like to know if it requires a jet adjustment.  Thanks...this forum is great!

No experience with the MAC but I would check with member Don R about stainless mufflers he has made for the 75/6 F.  He had a few made up but they are all sold and he was talking about building some more.  I have a standing order for one whenever he gets around to it.  About half the price of the MAC.

If you want to sell your stock muffler I would be interested.

I've been running the slip on Mac on my '75 SS for over a year now. I like the sound (getting louder over time) and the look. It is inexpensive and was easy to install. It does not come with any type of clamp where it slips over the pipe. The dealer said one was not needed, but after the first few rides I realized there was a slight leak at that junction. I used a stainless band clamp I bought at Jegs for less than $10.00. The clamp worked great and sealed the connection completely. The chrome seems exceptionally well done on the one I bought.
Overall I'd give it a 10. 8)

Thanks very much for that.  Do you have a pic of it on your bike?  Do you think the stock muffler clamp works with it or is the Jegs clamp a better look?  Did you re-jet your bike after installing it?  -Chuck

Here you go.  He was offering two different baffles too.  Send him a PM if interested.

I ran the Mac slip on for a while. Good chrome but it's relatively heavy. The baffle in mine is a heavy duty piece and does not have any fiberglass packing so there is no reason that the noise level would change. Bolt on and go. Can't say for sure about jetting as mine is not stock and I've gone from 300+ elevation to 7000'. I'd try it first and see how it does. May not need to change. The increased noise level/sound over stock (it's not bad) may cloud the ear dyno though so be sure to do before and after plug chops to read your jetting and not rely on perceived butt or ear dynos.

I've seen Don's and he's done a nice job. I'd recommend his too. Probably lighter. IMO those are the only 2 options to go with. Mac discontinued their's for a while but I hear they are available again.

Thanks Jerry.  Do you also make a slip-on?  Any pics of yours?

No, I don't make one. I'm running a Kerker but still have the Mac and my original. The baffle in the Mac is an offset set of pipes so no straight through flow. That's the baffle I was referring to in reference to Tanqueracer's info. Perhaps his is different than mine. I'd toyed with the idea of removing the front half of the offset to see what difference that made in performance and noise level though.

I did not have to re-jet the carbs. I run the stock airbox and all the other stock components. The stock clamp will not work. If you use a clamp it has to be an aftermarket one. I prefer the stainless as it's shiney like chrome although it is a slightly different color. I hope the pic comes out. It is attached (maybe) 8)

Don't know if mine is different than yours or not. I bought mine one year ago. Maybe it's my imagination or my hearings getting worse, but it seems louder than it was at first, under acceleration. I have no way to confirm that ofcourse, just seems so. Let me know if you play with the baffles in the Mac. I was thnking of doing the same thing. At cruising speeds it's pretty quiet.  8)
